Hi, will my TV play HD when that is broadcast by Freeview?? Or will the built in decoder only cope with standard definition??

If it won't then I am somewhat disappointed , as this in not clearly ststed in any literature at POS . it is supposed , after all to be HD ready!1

Highly unlikely. The broadcasting specs for HD are different to SD and when (if) they eventually broadcast HD on freeview the standard used will require users to buy new decoders.

Sorry to hear that! Possibly the forum members should have a whip round for you!

Assuming you cannot get a refund from your supplier, what sort of size of whip round would make up for this major disappointment.

Surely you must see my point?? If it is supposed to be HD ready but then cannot receive HD broadcasts when they come , then this is somewhat misleading. As it happens it will not be a problem for me as I would probably go down the Sky HD route anyway.

I am asking the question because I have been asked it by my father who has just bought a Sony 32" HD ready set and was wanting to try and watch some HD content via freeview, which i know is not available yet due to bandwidth etc etc.But when it is available would it work

A reasonable question that deserves a reasonable answer??

I see your point and it's a very reasonable point to the average joe public but prepared to be very disapointed.

HDFreeview tuners aren't yet fitted to TV's .... they're either still finalising the specification or have only recently done so and the hardware is probably still being designed.

The new spec requires new hardware and this will mean virtually all existing HD ready TV's will not receive HD Freeview.

I suspect a great many people who got their 'HD Ready' or 'Full HD' TV's will be rather upset when the FreeviewHD channel(s) launch which may not be until 2013 for some areas.

Of course there will be freeview HD settop boxes for a couple of pounds by then I suspect but that's hardly the point.

You have to wonder if they should just sell monitors these days and add the box required, as and when they become obsolete!

The only defence I suppose is that no one ever should have sold the HD TV's as being HD Freeview ready (the word 'HD Freeview tuner' being the key here) - an HD TV isn't capable of receiving SkyHD or cable HD services either without additional hardware (yes there's the Freesat HD TV from Panasonic and coming soon from LG)

Maybe you should have done some more adequate research on the meaning of HD Ready - it's very specific.

No transmissions, so no sets capable of doing it - many of the Sony range will receive the French DTT HD system though.

As already suggested, read what HD Ready means - your set does exactly what it says, so you have no real reason to be disappointed.
