Hello,

Last July I signed up for a BT landline on a 18 month contract (this was so I could take advantage of their £29.99 connection fee)

As they are increasing their line rental charges from 1st April can I change to another provider without their being a penalty?

Sadly no. Within the terms and conditions they will state they are entitled to raise prices (within reason and inflation factoring) by giving you notice. However you can appeal to them and ask if they would release you from the contract due to your own personal circumstances. You could sugar coat it by saying you would switch to plusnet or madasafish which offer cheaper prices but are both owned by BT.

Well since I posted my original post, BT have agreed to allow me to be released from contract as the price increase is to my detriment. They have released me as per the terms and conditions. I did not have to appeal or sugarcoat as you put it. But thank you for your reply.

Coincidenctly, I contacted BT today to discontinue my contract and they're adamant that I must pay the total amount for the remainder of the contract period. Please could you advise which department, or who you spoke to.

Hello, I had to go through the official complaints proceadure, which was done by email on the website and they then had to wait for the legal team to make a decision.

I also pointed out the specific paragraph in the T&C's that say I can cancel with no penalty if it is to my detriment and this is what allowed me to cancel. I am moving to my new billing provider on Friday and will save £5.00 per month based on the contract BT had me on. Whats weird is my billing provider will be Madasafish who already have BB wth, they are owned by BT.
