Speaker Advice
frailfury
01-02-2009
I am looking for a pair of speakers, either with built in sub or a seperate sub. Black in colour.

I have a pair of logitechs at the moment but they are a little too big to fit in my cabinet.

Anyone suggest some please? I want a minimum of 32w and it is for my HDTV for when I play music and games.

On a small budget of around £30, and looking at play.com if poss. Thanks.

No m8, I want to plug them into my HDTV to play games and music through them. Not bothered about 5.1 as no room in my lounge but I just want something to pump music out of!

I have 2 cube size spaces in my cabinet either side of the tv that are probably just under knee high where I want to put the speakers.

Thanks but I have £40 play vouchers so could do with spending them. I might just use the logitechs and cram them on the top and then buy the cheap £4.99 gigabyte ones for my pc. Not ideal but all I can think of.

Measure it and go to Play.com.

To be frank, with a budget of only £40, and no desire for quality audio, you have a mountain of choice that we couldn't possibly go through here. You ain't gonna get the fantastic acoustics of the Barbican Theatre.

And "32 watts" is pretty meaningless. Which yardstick are you using to come to those "32 watts"?

And are those Jimmy Clitheroe's knees or Robert Wadlow's?

My thoughts exactly.lol

You need at least 50wpc and a budget of around £250 + just for a decent entry level system.

There would be no point in even bothering wth sub boxes for that amount of power of 32 watts (not for TV anyway)

Back in the late 1990's - AIWA did a really decent pair of speakers with built in sub woofer, but they were part of a system. They were pretty big...but not that big and the audio quality wasn't that bad.

I dont think 40 quid will get you a lot...but you could always try your local on-line 'freecycle' as there are always people literally giving stuff like that away for free!

Anyone recommend some speakers for my PS3 from play? I want it for music and games. 2.1 or just 2.0 as long as it has decent built in bass. I did have a quick look but not sure whats good and whats not, and things like connections.

Also want them in black to match my ps3 and tv. Cheers.”

What 2.1 system would you advise? I have a logitech 2.1 I use for my PC at the moment which I think is excellent and sounds good with my TV, however it's such a drag having to turn the volume down everytime I want to play tunes. If I don't turn the volume down on the TV, you get this horrible echoing sound when playing via speakers and TV....”

I think they are brilliant and want to use them with my TV in my lounge, however the connection on the end of them is a normal headphone jack which goes into the back of my PC.

I want to plug them into my TV - but not the TV's headphone jack as that will cut out all sound from the TV, so is there a way I can plug them into the red/white connection on the back of my TV to turn them into tv speakers? I was thinking of one of these - ebay item number…”

I'm guessing Chris needs to get out more lol

I said 32w because the logitechs I tried out with my tv/ps3 actually go too loud when turned right up, so why would I need anything higher? Whats the point in having 100w speakers when you won't ever use them to that extent?!

I don't want speakers which would blow the neighbours away, I just want quality sound outputs and nothing special.

But if nobody can help thats fine, but please do me a favour, don't just post here to either make someone (me) look stupid to others, or to ruin my thread. There's no need for it really is there?

PMSL

I think you manage it on your own quite nicely.

You post questions without thought. Just look at this thread...

"I have a pair of logitechs at the moment but they are a little too big to fit in my cabinet."

...but you don't bother to say anything about the size of the space! That's kind of really basic required information, don't you think?

Later in the thread you wrote...
"I have 2 cube size spaces in my cabinet either side of the tv that are probably just under knee high where I want to put the speakers."

...yet still no mention of dimensions!! How is anyone here supposed to offer you any help?

Do you see how stupid your posts appear?

You've had excellent advice from people here in the past who have given you their time freely, yet you come back with pretty much the same question time and time again but you dress it up a different way.

We're a pretty tolerant and accommodating bunch on here, but speaking personally I have very little patience with those who consider it OK to waste the time of others just because they think it's "free".

"We're"? No sorry, you waste people's time on this forum and make them look like idiots.

You want to be helpful? Don't post, cos all you've done is wasted my time. Seriously, get a hobby pal.

You're missing the point. There are several ways of measuring the acceptable wattage of a loudspeaker and the output power of an amplifier.

More efficient speakers can make 32 watts (of whatever measure you care to use) sound very loud. While 32 watts of less efficient speakers will not have the same volume range, being somewhat quieter for a given volume setting.

Use the volume control if they're too loud. That's what it is there for. Amplifiers work best at half volume anyway. Using full volume can result in clipping and distortion. At half volume everything is performing comfortably within it's capabilities.

...and yet still no dimensions on these holes where the speakers 'must' fit

Ok, I have finally sorted this! I am using those 2.1 Logitechs for my PS3 and HDTV. They sound awesome and is all I need in my small lounge, here they are:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/110755...s/Product.html

The sub is in the corner behind the TV unit, and has 2 plug socket adapters balanced up against it you think this is all safe and ok?

For my desktop which will rarely be used, I am going to buy these:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/637198...s/Product.html

Don't need anythin powerful for the desktop, but these should sound ok enough. I don't know much about USB speakers though, you just plug them in and away you go? Any negatives about these? Thanks.

Seem to get a good response from those who bought. USB for power and signal is useful. The PC should recognise the presence of the speakers and then load the appropriate drivers. It's also worth checking after install if there is a more recent driver.

At £4.99 with free delivery it would be churlish to make any complaints.

Thanks. What about what I said about my sub behind the unit? Each speaker is either side of the tv aswell, is that safe?

It's difficult to visualise what you described, so I can't really comment about the safety.

Perhaps if you took some pictures, popped them on Flickr or one of the other free picture hosting sites then posted a link then we could make a more educated assessment.
