Play downloaded content on TV?
nigelmercier

Is there a device (perhaps a SlingBox?) that will allow me to play downloaded content on my TV from sources such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Catch-Up etc?

You can use a Wii for BBCi player.

If you have a laptop and a Sony LCD TV, then you can just use a VGA monitor cable (plus a 3.5mm jack-jack cable for the sound)...

I do have a Sony LCD TV, but the computer is in another room: hence my question.

OK. I'm in the same boat, but I've got a spare laptop, hence my answer!!!

I think what you're looking for is known as a "media streamer". It's a box that connects to your TV, and plays media files from your PC via a wireless network connection. I haven't used one myself, so can't give you any details.

The best thing to use is an Xbox 360 or a PS3, just put all your stuff onto a memory stick and you are ready to go. You can use these for virtually all video files, as there are programmes that can make non-compatible compatible within minutes.

There are some dvd players that offer such service, but be very careful as most of them are wack.

the OP wants to watch iPlayer etc on his tv
not other existing media content already on his pc

youd need to be able to output your computer screen to your tv
still leaves an issue with control though

You could try something like this -> http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...C=SO&U=strat15

Seems to send the VGA (Or possibly S-Video) signal to a TV, there are plenty other similar devices around too.

Either that or if it's a TV with VGA, you could get the toolset out -> http://myhometheater.homestead.com/vgacable.html

Check out Fetch TV's smart box - currently allows BBC iPlayer on the TV other catch ups reportedly coming soon. Here's a Which? review

This is still the best option here by far.

Just browse to the iPlayer website using the web browser.

The quality and framerate is dreadful though and for me was unwatchable.

Hi! All
Although I have had problems trying to get content onto it[I think due to wrong fil format], I have a media player called IOMega HD which is 500GB and will play films, photos, music etc.

So if you have an HD or HD Ready TV then you could always get one of these as it is an external multi-media hard drive, I saw it advertised on a TV Shopping Channel and you can get them at PC World.

The were saying that you can use it with any tv, so if you visit relatives you could take it to let them see a film on ot.

As I have said, I have had problems getting films that I have downloaded to play on it and have so far only been able to get downloaded music to play on it.

Furthermore I see from the new Tesco Direct magazine that there is a box for £79, into which you can plug a portable hard drive into in order to play HD content on your tv.

But not everything. For example it is not compatible with Eurosport Player.

I stream to my TV from my laptop via my HDD/DVDR which I can use to give me Chase Play functionality.

One option the OP may wish to look at is Slingcatcher but it is twice the price I would pay it.

I use XBMC running on the original XBox. I have 3 of them now, all modded (2 chipped, one softmod) and all with ITV player and Iplayer, as well as the plethora of codecs for downloaded playback of network-shared video and audio. It's just not Hi Def capable on XBox.

I made the mistake of buying one of these things too, but I very rarely use it for the same reason. Got fed up with the "codec not supported" error message when I try to play video on it. I just plug my laptop into the TV now.

Does anybody know if these players can be updated? It's next to useless as it is at the moment.
