Hi

My friends recieving broadband router tomorrow, and Im going round to set it up....

...I was just wondering how can I find out which is the BT master socket. There isn't a NTE5 with removable faceplate.

There is a standard phone socket in the kitchen / dining area, a standard phone socket in the main bedroom, and some kind of "service plate" behind the tv, with sockets for aerials, sattelites and telephone.

There might be a plate somewhere which looks "empty" with a plain faceplate on; i.e. no socket to attach a phone. When we got the line properly installed the BT engineer changed it so it had a socket on instead (we requested it, but the extensions are working fine and we get full speed from them).

I think they're common in new builds to make it easier for the line to be installed and split.

how do they get away with not installing the standard nte5 mastersockets, with the internal test socket?

How does the end user know what there demarcation point is?

They do install them. They often "hide" them behind plain faceplates.

yes - this is present. Its just inside the front door so it's highly likely you are correct.

There was no engineer sent out when they had the line connected - it was just done at the exchange.

It depends on how the line was connected in the first place, and if the BT engineer needs to come to the property to fiddle with the DP box (it took us ages to find it - it was in the electricity meter room which serves the entire block). If the line as connected prior to moving in, then it only needed 'activating' by BT. Our line had never been connected so required the engineer to install it by pairing it up. He ha to go find the cabinet in the street, too.

It's very likely that the thing just inside the door is the master socket in the flat. You should be able to unscrew the bottom half and see. It'll look ugly if there's no face plate on, though.

Since it's a new build it's likely (I said likely ) the wiring is up to scratch to work fine, as long as everything else is filtered (the master doesn't need filtering if there's nothing in it, of course).

depending on how new the "new" build is, you could have an external NTE. looks like a large grey box with a single screw and is situated just at where the cable enters the house on the outside wall.
