We recently purchased a Samsung LE32A457C1DX 32'' LCD HD Ready IDTV which is working perfectly apart from one issue.

We've set it to "Auto Wide" so that it displays in 16:9 for widescreen programming and 4:3 for everything else (therefore not horizontally stretching 4:3 broadcasts). However, this switching only appears to be working when watching via the internal digital (DVB-T) tuner, not analogue (not sure if it should work on analogue or not), Sky or DVD (DVD Player connected to Sky via scart, which is connected to TV via scart).

After looking at the setting to try and fix this, I noticed there were to screen "size" (or similar) settings, which one should be set and to what in order to get the desired result? Sorry i can't remember exactly what the options are, am at work at the moment.

Sorry if this seems a stupid question, this is our first 16:9 TV

Thanks

Any device connected to your tv should do as you wish when set correctly.

So Sky and dvd players should all be set to 16:9 in the video output setup menus of those devices (but it wont work with HDMI connected Sky HD).

Then the problem is to find which setting for the tv does what you want.

Philips sets need to be set to 4:3 for auto switching to function.

AUTO on some sets means it will all auto switch to 16:9 regardless of whether its 4:3 or not and AUTO on other makes will switch it between 16:9 and 4:3.

Some sets may even offer you alternate settings for each AV input

Forget analogue - you dont need it anyway but there is no anamorphic 16:9 material on analogue .

So you need to check the dvd is set for 16:9 in the VIDEO menu then see which TV option makes it switch ratios as you want it to.

Having said that- if this is your first wide tv it sounds as if all thats required is changing the output to 16:9 in any connected devices

This has been set correctly on the devices (DVD Player and Sky box). Was the first thing I did. Normal 16:9 broadcasts look fine (not streched/squashed), it's 4:3 with the problem)

Ok, wiil have a look. I think the image settings on the TV are Aspect Ratio and one is Screen Size. At the moment Screen size is 16:9, and Aspect Ratio is set to Auto Wide.

So you say some TVs (Philips for example) only switch when set to 4:3? Strange thing though is with the current setting, Freeview switched aspect ratio but nothing else. You'd expect that If settings where incorrect, Freeview wouldn't switch either.

Will try setting Scren Size to 4:3 when I get home and report back.

Each make has its own unique oddities.

I doubt whether changing screen size to 4:3 will work but you may as well give it a try.

It would be the aspect ratio more likely to need altering.

Try each setting then input a 4:3 image and then a 16:9 image from the same source and see if it changes.

I'm in the same boat I'm afraid and it seems Samsung TV's just don't like autoswitching over HDMI, the only workaround I can suggest is that on your sky remote if you press the TV button then the pause button this will change the aspect ratio on your TV manually. Not a fix but at least means you don't need to switch between two remotes the whole time, also when watching eg The Simpsons on Sky1HD it will show in 16:9 but with back bars forcing the image to appear 4:3 as opposed to watcing it on the SD channel
