Typical "Showbiz" - All gold and glamour were people see it and peeling paintwork and pipes back stage. No point in spending a single penny on something that isn't seen by the paying public.
I did a tour of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane when Miss Saigon was on: The WOW of the show; The lights, the sound, the songs, the drama, that one off special night looks a hell of a lot different during the day under cold hard fluorescent lighting on a bare matt black painted stage. You are shocked at how can they turn this into a magical wonderland every night. And the back stage area and little passages are peeling black paint and dark and lead to small dressing rooms for the large cast to rush into for their 30 second costume change.
Typical showbiz!
