i read once that the Beatles and ABBA basically invented all of modern pop between them, i'd say the Beatles did the most as they paved the way open for bands to perform their own song and do their own thing (i know others did this too but the Beatles opened the doors to it being accepted and the norm).

The Beatles are the biggest influence but its Abba I listen to. Abba rock
It makes me laugh when Noel Gallagher says its the beatles, the sex pistols, the jam, the stone roses, then oasis that are the great influences of the last 40 years. I agree with him apart from oasis (who are dreary, frigid, boring, talentless etc) But I would stick Abba in there too just for making great music and great songs. Sadly they are a bad influence cos anyone who tries to sound like them or if sad old producers get kids to sing their songs it always sounds awful ![]() Elvis was a big influence at the start but I dont like his songs or voice. Apparently John Lennon said Elvis` influence finished when he joined the army. |

Abba just created some timeless party hits. And stopped before they lost it.

Abba were a lot more than that.
"one of us" and "the winner takes it all" are very touching sad songs ( to me anyway) and nobody could beat them for upbeat songs like "dancing queen" and "super trouper" The whole "super trouper" album was class (ask any Australian )heres the video (legal) of Super trouper just as a reminder of how good they were (one of my fav songs. About a big stage light apparently ) http://www.vivaplus.tv/player/setup....16&fid=8906713 and heres a good documentary on The Jam. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/...ries/jam.shtml |

I'm not sure which Abba song it was but John Lennon said it had the greatest intro to a pop song he had ever heard.

well he died in Dec(?) 1980 so there was only a couple of Abba albums to go (Super Trouper was already out). I will take a guess he meant Dancing Queen. The arrangement and the way the words fit the song are amazing. It keeps going up and up and then when I expect it to go down it goes up and stays there etc. Its a classic. Right up there with "God Save the Queen" and " Pretty Vacant" and "Holiday in the sun" etc. Abba, The Sex Pistols, and The Jam were the kings of the 70s (of accessible music anyway).
I would say the Eagles (in hindsight) are up there for relaxed music. |

for anyone that hasnt heard the Jam, start off at part 2 and prepare to have your mind blown
For buyers, start off at "all mod cons" and continue .... http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/...ries/jam.shtml |

if anyone has their mind blown out by the Jam (through listening to this show and being too young to remember them) can you let me know.
It would give me a thrill The Jam are king. Not Paul Weller, The Jam (Wellers early songs)

Just a couple of points to add. Supertrouper isn't about a large stage light it's about a performers anguish on stage. A supertrouper is the name of a large stage light that shines a beam down onto the main performer.
The only album of original material after Supertrouper was Visitors which is even better than the excellent Supertrouper IMO. Lots of reissues with some particularly good bonus tracks and collections though. |

I don't even know how you an compare these two "Classic" Artistets. They are completely different genres of music with The beatles being 50 and 60's rock 'n' roll and ABBA being 70's and 80's pop.
They both contributely greatly to the music industry and will never be forgotten. |

This has got to be the crappest thread ever. I think I will start a "who's best Simon & Garfunkel or the Cheeky Girls" thread. Look at any serious music poll over the last 20 years Time magazine, Rolling Stone magazine etc, they are absolutely always won by the Beatles (maybe sometimes the Stones, or Bob Dylan may feature) Elvis Presley is not even usually revered that highly so ABBA? don't make me laugh. They were good at what they done but so were the Carpenters, the Beach Boys, and thousands of others, you have to be VERY special to start a thread anyone versus the Beatles.
