Can someone remind me as to why Apple did not include MMS on the iPhone. I've trawled the net but just come up with disgruntled rants from owners wanting to MMS.

Apple frequently omits features when it feels that the product can survive without them.

That's not particularly good for consumers.

I read that it is because in the US, most people don't send SMS/MMS. I don't know how true this is...

IMHO Apple didn't include it as;

1) they had a vested interest in promoting email for picture (and other) data transfers. This may seem a fairly normal act but the level they plug their profit making Mobile Me to is outrageous (I'll stick with my free push email via mail2web.com, ta). They also didn't seem to want to enable the Bluetooth for Data Transfer either.

2) they knew that a significant proportion of Apple purchasers are happy with whatever Apple tell them and would never question their decisions.

This from an iphone owner/user.

I'd agree with that, especially number 2.

I have checked out Mail2Web and it works with the iPhone perfectly and the push works faultlessly. It is also easy to sync it up with my OS X Address Book. However, the problem I have is with the mail and calendars on the computer. I haven't been able to find a way how to sync it up with a desktop email client, because the Outlook Web Access is completely lacking especially when prepared to other webmail clients such as GMail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail. The thing I really miss is being able to start typing a contact into the To field when composing an email and the contacts start showing up. Any ideas on moving Mail2Web to the desktop for free?

I am currently using GMail because the web interface is so much better, plus I can use NuevaSync to push my Google Calendars to my iPhone. I would like to use Mail2Web though because it does work so well.

I can't see them ever adding bluetooth data transfer. That would allow you to move files aound with going through iTunes which goes TOTALLY against the Apple grain.

A2DP maybe, but not data.

Adding bluetooth for synching data wouldn't be against the Apple grain at all - why not allow bluetooth data sync, or tethering as a modem?

A2DP should have been in there from the outset - its a pretty useful feature for a media centric device.

I could see them allowing bluetooth data sync to your iTunes maybe.

What I mean is free data movement to any old bluetooth device. I can't see them allowing that. Apple like everything done through iTunes, free bluetooth data movement would circumvent that.

ie.

"Whats that MP3 you have there John?"
"Oh, it's <such and such>"
"Cool. Can you bluetooth it over to my <insert phone name>?"
"No problem"
*bluetooth data transfer to random non-Apple phone commences*

Thats what I can't see happening.

That's easily solved - just don't give the Bluetooth utility access to the entire file system. Allow it to send and receive v-cards (the iPhone is the only phone I can remember for eight years that didn't accept or send v-cards. Even OSX desktops have native v-card support!) and give it access to a sandboxed documents folder and the picture folder, and that's it.

You now have functional bluetooth for 99.99% of uses that doesn't allow any sharing of music (well, you could drop them into the documents folder, but they wouldn’t play).

...except you have to pay to send an MMS.

If Apple actually gave us mere plebs proper MMS themselves, any MMS you sent would presumably just come out of your normal message allowance as with any other mobile phone (1 MMS = 4 SMS IIRC?).

That is true.

O2 does allow you to use your allowance for media messages (4 messaging credits, like you say).

Apple tends to be first n removing features people think they need like the floppy disk drive. People eventually catch up. I suspect that MMS is one of those features that will eventually vanish. Why pay out of your allowance to send a picture when you can do it for free via email?

Bluetooth sync will never happen as it is too slow. I doubt they will even offer Wi-Fi as it is still so much quicker through a cable.

Ha Ha if you don't like what is on offer from Apple nobody is forcing people to buy from them

Don't worry MS is making a Zune phone

As for MMS why would a i phone user bother when they have email . Get with the times.

Some people say they use MMS when they want to send to people with older/out of date phones but seriously if the picture is worth sending either email, send to a free web page or print it out and do everyone a favour.
