Erratic HDMI switching through Panasonic DMR EX78
2000sj
07-02-2009
Don't know if anyone's had similar experience but I have a problem with the HDMI connection from my Panny DVD recorder.
I think the problem may be with the Panny

The set up is a Sky+ box RGB scart to Panny AV2 scart - then Panny HDMI to Sony TV. Turning on Sky should allow pass through on the Panny and switch the TV to HDMI.

The Panny is left on full standby to allow pass through.

Turning on the Sky box, the TV auto switches to HDMI and I get audio but no video, just a grey screen. I have to turn on the Panny to get the video - if I then turn it off, the Sky picture remains - as it should.

Occasionally the link works as intended switching Sky through the DVD recorder without any further intervention.

I've checked all the connections and swapped the HDMI lead, but nothing makes a difference. The Panny seems to work correctly in all other respects.

Any thoughts would be welcome

If you have the Sky "Scart control" set to ON ( services/system setup/picture settings)- it might perhaps be confusing the tv which will be wanting to switch to the AV RGB input and the HDMI at the same time

If the Sky scart control is set to OFF have you linked the HDMI from the Panny to the Sony's version of Viera Link via the Sony's onscreen menu?

It definitely is.

You must have had it on Powersave mode.

Even if it didnt switch to HDMI it should have switched to RGB for Sky while the recorder was in standby

Before Xmas I trialled the EX78 and my scart daisy chain of motorised satellite,Freeview recorder and Virgin box all auto switched the tv to HDMI when the Panny was in standby.

The Panny must not be left in power save mode as this stops the loopthrough.

However I swapped the Panny recorder for a Pioneer which I prefer for a couple of features.

As this is used only for dvdr I've not used the HDMI switch as it confused my multi switch where my Panny Bluray player is connected.

Now only the Bluray player and Sky HD are connected via the 2 separate HDMI inputs.

So the other devices are now only viewed via scart

That will teach me not to read the instruction manual.

Thing broke a few weeks ago anyhow, pulled out the hard drive and put it in my Sky+.

Thanks for your help.
The Sky scart control is on and, I guess this is what causes the switching through the HDMI link to the TV. (I don't have a scart connection to the TV)

However, I think I've solved the problem.
I read on another thread that someone had problems with video switching via scart on his AV amp. He did a system reset on the amp which solved it.
I did this last night on the Panny (can't remember what it's called but it's deep within the 'others' menu).
This seems to have fixed it - should have thought around it a bit more - just like reinstalling Windows - but not that bad

I had a similar problem but after much cursing and faffing with assorted menus, the villain of the piece was a loose scart connector: just a gnat's out of position and it cattled the whole setup.
