Dead dvd recorder?

My Pioneer 4 year old dvd recorder has suddenly (in the space of an hour or so, after it worked perfectly) decided not to recognise anything but cds. Pre-recorded and homemade RWs are dead to it as far as playing and recording are concerned, although the hard drive is still ok.
Cleaning the lens had no effect.
Does this sound like something terminal or is it worth trying to get it fixed?

Yes it sounds gone,my pioneer dvd recorder died after 3 years, towards the end the discs it could read in the early years it could no longer read,it never got to the stage of being unable to read any disc so yours sounds in a worse state.

After the disc problems the power supply packed in.

The hard drive is still fine if you give up on the recorder just take the drive out and put it in a caddy,it will no doubt be a western digital hard drive. They were installing that brand 4 years ago.

Thanks. I've a feeling you're right. If only everything was a durable as Western Digital drives.
