What to do about my Television ?.

Hi All,

I have been a proud owner of a Sony DLP 3 LCD 50" Television for just over 3 years now (Originally cost me about £1300) & has only been in repair once (around 12 months ago), due to the lamp failing & getting a darker picture & am now due to extend my warranty for another year.

Anyway the same problem has arisen & now gotta have the brightness set on max to get a decent picture.

Now the problem I have is that I spoke to the shop about the problem & about the renewal of the extended warranty & the manager of the shop that I spoke to, had a hunch that even if I extend the warranty of the product, it will no longer cover the replacement of the lamp .

I have checked the cost of the lamp & is on average about £130. Depending on what setting is used the lamp will give about 1 years of viewing before it need replacing again. Each lamp purchased only comes with 90 days warranty.

Now I got 2 options

(1) Save up for a 42" Plasma for when the lamp finally snuffs.

(2) Replace the bulb

So folks what do you reckon, are plasmas worth the price tag ?. Or should I give my current set another lease of life ?

Well the lamp would be considered a consumable, rather like ink for a printer. So it's not surprising it wouldn't be covered by a warranty.

As the lamp is relatively cheap, compared to a new telly, I'd go for a lamp if that's the only thing worrying you.

But if it is so old that it won't work with new kit, then, when it finally gives out, I'd consider updating it.

But if a lamp only costs £130, then it would be about 4 lamp changes before you would have recouped the expense of a new TV.

It is more a matter of economics, than serviceability, I would have thought.

As already suggested, lamps are consumable items, and not covered by warranty (extended or otherwise) - however, I wouldn't expect a gradually darkening picture to be due to lamp failure. It's far more likely to be due to dirty optics, and these are supposed to be replaced rather than cleaned, although you can usually get away with cleaning them once or twice.

From an insurance point of view I would replace the optical assembly, as the insurance probably wouldn't pay for cleaning.
