Help with HD/Bluray/DVD content.

Hi All,

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, and bear with me, newbie on the forum and hoping any of the members will be kind enough to help me out.

We've just bought a generation five 1080p 37" Samsung, in a package deal with a Samsung Home Cinema system, the home cinema system also says 1080 on it, it is 5.1 audio.

In the past, home entertainment has left me cold, I have found it a little flat and boring, however, the picture and sound quality of the two units we have now is inspiring me to dig a little deeper and try and gain better knowledge.

We are also upgrading to V+, as our Thomson PVR has been good, but we like the idea of being able to record multiple channels etc... We also believe that the V+ "upscales" a little bit. I understand that Virgin only have trial HD, but am led to believe that in March, some HD channels will start to roll out with them. Could some advise me of this and answer the following questions please?

Is there such a thing as High Definition non Bluray content?

What is the way to get the best from the DVD/Cinema system and TV on playback?

We have the PURE HDMI cable and digital optical interconnects.

Thanks for your trouble in reading and hopefully helping out with this, I'm sure, relatively easy question for you guys!

Very best wishes

yes there is upscaling to non Blu Ray standard

sometimes the dvd machine will upscale or the telly itself

sometimes both and one of them is probally better than the other, just to confuse things

have you considered Sky HD or freesat HD + ?

also a £10 HDMI cable is just as good as a £100 cable

at the moment all you need to worry about is 720, 1080 i and 1080 p in that order.

also HDMI version 1.3

become a HDMI installer

Hi Niall.

Thanks for the replies, it's a HT-Z310 amp/dvd.

theres no on line manual for it but it does say it upscales and has optical IN so you could hook the V + box up with that OR the HDMI cable from the telly to the dvd player can carry the signal so whatever you are watching on the telly will automatically be played in the amp sending the sound around your room

Can it do this??

and whats the telly model

Yes, you can download high definition movies, clips, etc.

Microsoft have a nice gallery of High Definition WMV files here [click]. You can even buy them on standard DVDs, but they won't play on a standard DVD player, of course, unless it is in a computer or specially adapted DVD player which has the necessary codec.

Note: computers also need the relevant codec, but it's a free download.

Thanks for the replies..

It seems that we're doing everything right, just checked the price of HD DVD's online and find them to be ridiculously expensive, will keep to the standard ones we use now and hope the price comes down!

Looking forward to getting the V+ box and maybe seeing*some* HD content before March.

Thanks once again
