Iplayer on mobile phones
I'm looking to upgrade my phone.
And have seen that the Nokia 5800 has iplayer my question is how does it work do you have to be connected to the mobile internet to watch a show will it cost me more money? Also are there any other phones that have the iplayer? |

I got the Sony Ericsson X1, it works with iplayer, but only works with Opera browser and when connected to WiFI, same as the iphone, only works when connected to WiFi. I think it's bcoz 3G isn't fast enough. You can go to the iplayer website, it has a list of phones that work with iplayer.

There is an iPlayer Application for Windows Mobiles now. It's available from the xda-developers forums. Think you will find it either under the Diamond Apps section or the hacking and development thread. It's identical to the YouTube player found on the Diamond. The videos playback in CorePlayer which is not a free player or the alternative is TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) which is free but only a few versions of TCPMP work on the Diamond anyway.
I'm also thinking of getting rid of the Diamond and buying an iPhone though. So think carefully before getting one. Not sure if it's a Diamond issue or Windows Mobile I'd blame for it not being quite good enough. It does everything I want it to do. Probably does more than the iPhone unless you hack your iPhone then that is probably just as good, if not better. |

Thanks.
Do you have to pay for the wifi? What I mean is can I download a tv show to my phone and watch it with out paying extra to watch it. Like I download of the iplayer to my computer and watch a show I have it for 30 days after downloading it. Does it work the same as a computer? |

Not quite the same. I think it does vary slightly depending on the type of phone.
I tried it out on my 5800 last night. It needs wifi. If you use your home wifi or a free wifi hotspot, that doesn't cost you anything. On the 5800, you can only stream and watch, you can't download. I believe some other phones let you download and watch later, like on the PC, but I'm not sure on that point ..... |

The only reason if it were possible was so I could watch them on tube on the way to work. |

Only some phones let you download & watch later on - they need to support the right DRM (Digital Rights Management). The iPlayer client for the Nokia N96/N85 lets you download & watch later. But, although you can use the same client on a Nokia N95, you can only use it to stream on that, as the N95 doesn't have the DRM support. I don't know what else works, but I would have thought that the new/upcoming Nokia phones like the 5800 & the N97 would also have the download ability. From the BBC iPlayer site: Quote:

When downloading select the 'for portable devices' option, save the downloaded programme to your computer, then copy it to your handset Additionally Sony Ericsson C905 and Samsung Omnia users are able to stream live TV and Radio programmes. At this stage on demand radio services are not available on these handsets. |

From earlier in this thread ..... like, about 4 posts up ... Quote:

Cool!
Just a firmware update. Too late to start looking into it tonight, but will see about applying any updates tomorrow. I'll let you know .... |
