Turning a monitor into a tv
zulujuju

Does anyone know if i can turn a Acer flat screen monitor into a tv.

I've been given the computer but don't use it as I have a laptop and it's just gathering dust.

Was wondering if we can use it as a tv.

Thanks

Yes you can, but it's not a free/cheap thing to do. What's your budget?

Thanks for the reply,

Not really thought about budget, would it be a lot.

Would it be better to just get a tv instead if it will cost a lot.

Thanks

You're probably going to need:

a TV tuner - a freeview box might do if you have a decent aerial signal; or a DVD player - Either would ball park at about £30

something to convert the basic video signal from freeview (or a DVD) into an RGB Data signal for the monitor - Ball park £100 for something worth buying

Depending on the speakers in the monitor then you might want something louder - A fiver for something really basic through to £50 - £100 perhaps for something with remote volume control.

Add £10-£20 for cables

Add a couple of hours messing about time to get an OK picture before you finally decide the whole thing was a waste of time and cash
If you've already got a PC with a decent speaker set, then the only cost is a USB or PCI Freeview receiver. About £30 or so. Setup should only take about 20 minutes, installing the software and doing a channel search.

If you have a satellite dish and LNB(s), you can get a PCI DVB-S card for less than £40.

You should be able to get a Windows USB IR remote control for about £20, but the Hauppauge cards include one anyway.

A PC makes the best PVR by miles over anything else, because it is so infinitely flexible.

Is the Acer screen 4:3 or 16:9?
