Yep, there's loads made. Unfortunately none for sale in the UK.

The UK broadcasters won't allow recording of their HD content on anything but a PVR such as a SkyHD box, Virgin Box, or Freesat HD PVR. Because of the EDID handshake simply plugging in the HDMI cable between one of these boxes and a Blu-ray recorder would disable the HD signal or downgrade it to standard definition.

You can buy them for your PC at a very reasonable price, It wouldn't surprise me if they haven't cracked the HDCP so you could plug in your HD box and record it.

Except how do you get the programme out of your HD box?.

That is the question.

Everything else has been cracked, unless there is some magical process between the HDMI of your Sky box and TV. I have a few HD clips from celeb sites, so someone has managed it.

Probably only a matter of time.

...from your link...

"HD-PVR records component video (YCrCb) from cable TV and satellite set top boxes"

Unfortunately this is not the same thing as recording a digital HD stream via a HDMI connection.

I'd question the need for a DVD recorder at all unless you want to archive a lot of TV recordings.

The future of TV is digital - and whether it's Sky or Freeview there are PVRs for SD and HD on both those platforms. They run rings around any DVD Recorder I've come across for useability. So a set top box with a hard drive makes more sense than a DVD Recorder unless you're archiving or have other uses for it such as transferring from a camcorder.

It's still HD though, you wont get that from the scart output. I was reading a thread on here about the early Thompson HD boxes having component out becoming a prized possession.

There is still a big market for video clips, I used to enjoy posting TV clips on celeb forums, there is always something interesting to share with others around the world.

If you can get a reasonably priced RGB capture card (the only ones I can find are about £200), you could, theoretically I suppose, use an HD-Fury with a VGA to RGB adapter.

An HD-Fury can take the output from a DVI digital source and convert it to VGA analogue. It's primary purpose is to enable you to connect a PC to an HD compatible TV/Monitor, making it fully HD-Ready, complete with HDCP. I believe an HDMI to VGA version is now available, but if not you can use a HDMI to DVI cable.

PC sat card which supports DVB-S2, a CAM, loader card and programmer with suitable firmware and a genuine SKY HD subscription smartcard, and all done via HDMI not component.
