The country music thread
I thought I'd start this thread in order to divert the arguments in the Taylor Swift thread which is heading off topic at the moment.
So what are your favourite country songs and artists? What albums are you looking forward to? What are your recommendations to other country fans? |

Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson for me, I like the old school. Merle, Waylon, Willie, Kris and Johnny.
As a recommendation its a bugger to find but its worth the search, About Love by Tom T Hall. I do however have a soft spot for Sugarland. |

I'm loving the country feel! I absolutely love Dixie Chicks, they are all incredibly talented women and I hope they're working on a new album since Taking the Long Way came out a few years ago. Also Carrie Underwood of course, really have loved her since American Idol which feels just like yesterday. She's a lovely girl which makes her music all that more appealing. I getting into Taylor Swift now after not really being too sure on her at the beginning.
Also like Johnny Cash, Sugarland, Shania Twain and Martina Mcbride. |

Love Carrie, Tim, Faith, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts (new album in April, can't wait!), Taylor and others too numerous to mention!
Anyone else going to see Sugarland on their UK tour? I'm going to Glasgow if a)I can afford it, and b) if I can get a shift swap |

I don't listen to country music, not really my cup of tea but I love 16 Horsepower. TBH they were not strictly a country band but rather Alternative country/bluegrass/dark folk.
Very intense, powerful music. Haw Cinder Alley Clogger oh and Woven Hand but I guess it's even less country oriented than 16 Horsepower. |

I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash . All of his 'American' albums are essential, especially 'Solitary Man'. Kris's 'Me & Bobby McGee' & 'Jesus Was A Capricorn' are also well worth picking up. I recently downloaded & watched the entire run of Johnny Cash shows from 1969-71, and realised just how great people like Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell and Charley Pride actually are. I tagged along with my parents to a Glen Campbell show last year, and became a huge fan during the course of the show. I'm also into Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Ryan Adams, Neil Young, (not strictly country, I know, but his 'Comes A Time' album is) Gram Parsons & The Flying Burrito Brothers, Ralph Stanley & Emmylou Harris. Also, Chet Atkins & Mark Knopfler's album 'Neck & Neck' is a masterpiece of country guitar pickin'. |

Same for me, the Highwaymen & it's individual members. The VH1 Storytellers cd with Johnny & Willie is one of my favourite albums of any genre, and is one I would recommend to anyone.

Old style 60's and 70's country with the twangy steel guitar. I mainly like female artists Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Lynn Anderson and Patsy Cline. Not keen on the "new" country.

Yes I love it also! I am really into the modern contemporary crossover material as opposed to the old classic country music but I have to say I enjoy little bits of that also.
My two big favourites are of course Carrie & Taylor. Carrie for the incredible vocal ability and the fantastically catchy songs, Taylor for the amazing song writing skill and storytelling in her songs. Both so grounded and lovely young women and you can't help but love them. Also into Katrina Elam (A talent that should be heard!!), Miranda Lambert, Rascal Flatts and many others. Still the queen of country music has to be Shania and I still pray we get to hear a new album from her sooner rather than later. Apart from all the big hits she had I think a lot of people tend to forget how amazing a performer she is. Back in the day at her prime I think she could out sing Carrie, Martina etc...She was one of the best live singers I had ever seen Mostly into the genre because the vocal ability of the dominant female singers is so amazing! I didn't ever really get into Brad, Kenny etc... |

Garth Brooks must get a mention. An amazing talent who took country music and the performance side of things to new levels in the 90s. Johnny Cash will always be a favourite as well.

Too many to name all but faves are carrie, martina, trisha, brad, keith, vince, sara, leann, lee ann, faith,
IMO Carrie is the most underated vocalist on the planet (non country) - I truely believe she will be a legend like patsy, tammy, loretta, dolly by the time she is done. So many to choose from but this is simply magnificent http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhvaDJTUmrU |

What I know about country music would barely cover a napkin, but I've been aware of Carrie Underwood since she appeared on Idol. I liked her at the time, but the judges (and particularly Cowell) seemed to like her alot more than I did. But just over 18 months ago, I ended up listening to "Before He Cheats" and was rather surprised to find myself really liking it. Since then, I've realised that she is an outstanding live performer. More than any other contestant, I think she has improved massively since her days on American Idol.
While performances like "Alone" were very good, they don't even come close to matching what she does now. Despite a slightly too loud band, I actually thought her Grammy performance was great (and, funnily enough, a better rock performance than the flat affair offered by the "Best Rock Album" winners!). "Praying for Time" and "Stand By You" on Idol Gives Back, the Eddy Arnold tribute with Brad Paisley, "Make The World Go Away", which seemed so effortless plus more recently "I Know You Won't" which while not a great song showed how much stronger her voice has become and "Just A Dream" at the CMA's was brilliant as well. And various performances of "Last Name" and "Before He Cheats" (particularly Grammy 08) which show off a different side that I doubt she would have pulled off in her Idol days. It was great to see her pick up another Grammy, looking gorgeous all the while. And she seems down to earth which is nice, I thought it was notable that she was the only big name to come off the red carpet and into the half empty hall to accept an award on the pre-telecast show. She also strikes the balance with the Idol issue perfectly, thanking awards etc for welcoming her from an unconventional route but not getting sniffy about the show and always thanking it/Simon Fuller. I keep meaning to listen to more from the genre. Obviously I've heard of the likes of McBride, Shania and now, of course Taylor Swift, but it doesn't make much impact in the UK. |

I completely agree with C14E and Lullaby.
Carrie's voice is phenomenal, not only are her albums great but her live performances are just stunning. I don't think any other Idol winner has the ability and control over their voice as Carrie does [Kelly to an extent]. Praying for Time at Idol Gives back was WOW! She will be remembered for decades to come. |
