You need to leave it on charge for a good while to see if it wakes up. It will still charge through a USB port even though iTunes is not recognising it.

My latest iPod Touch 2G started to do this, the only way I could make it wake up was to press and hold both the Home and the top buttons for 5 seconds or so. It would then reboot and be OK for a while. I eventually took an Apple Store and they replaced it.

Try a master reset via the PC connected to Itunes, and it might wake it up.

Happened to mine a lot at first and this helped. If it's under warranty, might be best just to take it back and demand a replacement.

Let us know how you get on.

Try this,

Hold the Power button and home button together for a good 10 seconds.. you should then see the apple logo. the device will then reboot

You need to put it into recovery mode, hold the power and home buttons for exactly 10 seconds, then let go of the power button and keep holding the home button for 8-10 seconds.

Happened to me too. The 10 sec reset didn't work and I returned it to an apple shop. They pronounced it dead and replaced it (but the tight wads wouldn't include a free screen protector that I gave up in the process).
