I have been looking for an lcd tv which is 17" or 19" but non-widescreen, ie 5:4 format. I hate widescreen, especially on a small tv like this. Oh, and i need hdmi connection. All i can seem to find is a Hanspree 19" tv, which seems to have crap sound. Has anyone seen anything else?

So you hate the format that all TV broadcasts are in (except The Simpsons) and that all movie DVDs (and the majority of music DVDs and television programme DVDs) are released in? If you try really hard, you might find a black and white mono telly with no scart sockets as well...

Look a little harder, and you might find one that supports 405 lines, too.

When did aspect ratio become a religion?

Anyway, to answer the OP...

I very much doubt there are many LCD 4:3 TVs still around that feature HDMI, if the OP has found one I would go for it and get a better sound system for it.

Perhaps a bass speaker would help to "fill out" the sound since low frequencies are less directional than high frequencies and the bass speaker can therefore be placed in the general direction of the monitor.
--------

There are computer monitors still available in 4:3. One with a DVI-D input could probably be used (DVI-D and HDMI are electrically the same, for the video bit anyway)

If the monitor needed to be used with S-Video/Video inputs then a special box that converts analogue video to analogue VGA is needed. Those boxes are around £30 and most of them are not very good.

A high-end convertor would cost lots more.

Another option is a projector. You can pick up a new 4:3 XGA for around £360 inc VAT/P&P. HDMI might be a problem though at that price.

Modern projectors are so bright (especially on a smaller screen) you can use them even with the curtains open. A bit of wall could be painted white/greyish of a size around 40" diagonal (4:3) and it would look very bright/impressive even in daylight.

Of course, with a projector you can have a much bigger screen and therefore 16:9 starts to make more sense.

The speakers can be pointed at the wall and the sound would appear to be coming from the screen.

Modern projectors are also very quiet and typically have a lamp life of up to 4000 hours but there is always the risk of the lamp failing after far fewer hours than that.

My immediate thoughts as well. I'm wondering if the real issue is really one of space where the TV needs to sit?
