Wouldn't it just have been easier to type iPod Touch rather than having to preface your question by stating that by itouch you mean iPod Touch? You've ended up typing more than if you'd just put the proper name in the first place.

What files are you referring to? What are you planning to put on your iPod Touch? If you zipped them in the first place can't you unzip them before putting them on? An iPod Touch isn't the same as a desktop computer, there is no file structure to interact with so you can't just add files and interact with them - without installing specific apps.

I'm guessing a bit here as info in the original post is a bit vague.

OP ... do you currently play your video files without bothering to unzip/unrar them first? I'm aware VLC can play files like this, not sure about other apps.

In which case, if you want to put them on an iPod Touch then yes, you'll have to unzip/unrar them first. I assume you know how to do that on a PC.

You need to put them on the iPod via iTunes, and theres a pretty good chance you'll need to convert a lot of them first .... depends what format they are in at the moment.

Say i download a state of trance 400 (yes i know it hasnt been aired yet) but the whole show in one download will be like 8mixes zipped 2gether. Cant i download it on the itouch and unzip it on the itouch instead of a computer? Yes i know how to unzip on a pc, but what if im away from a pc and i want to unzip on my itouch?

You can't.

As moise says, it's a player ... not a mobile PC.

You download to the PC and then transfer to the iPod (through iTunes). Once on the iPod (dunno if the touch has a disc mode) you can't do anything with it at all if it's just stored on there as data.

So if the pc i use dusnt have itunes i cant store anything on it? What if i download a .mp3 file?

Lol.

Why don't you create a single thread with all your "itouch" questions?

You need a program to transfer music. if not iTunes, something else like MediaMonkey. Pit fall of the Touch I'm afraid.

Unless you have wi-fi and purchase a track from iTunes on the touch.

You need to have iTunes to transfer music to your touch, its free to download.

There is a mini version of the itunes online store on the touch. Anything you buy from there, videos, music, apps etc, will be automatically transferred to your computer the next time you sync with itunes.

Anything you buy from the itunes store on your iPod Touch is then ready to use on the player. You don't need to transfer stuff to the PC first then back to the touch. That wouldn't be very convenient would it?

So essentially:

Stuff on your PC needs to be transferred via itunes to your iPod touch. Stuff you buy on your ipod touch from the itunes store is downloaded directly and is playable. The itunes store is the only way you can download and play directly on the iPod touch without needing a PC.

Eh?

You can't download just anything onto the touch. You can stream direct mp3/mov links on a webpage (but NOT store/save). You can buy tracks and apps from iTunes and they'll be stored to synch back to your PC. But you CAN'T download .rar or .zip files and store them on your iPod. Or programs. Or .avi files, etc etc. It's not a personal computer. What you can do with it is strictly governed by the Apple apps and software.

If you want that trance mix on your iPod, you'll need to unzip it on your PC, add it to iTunes, connect your touch and synch it thataway.

If you know and accept these parameters, it's an amazing device.

Why anyone would buy a device costing so much without knowing about those limitations is amazing tbh.

Realistically how many people are going to be wanting to download zip files of music on the go then be able to open them and listen to them when they could just do it when near their machine. An iPod is a music player, not a management tool - that's what iTunes is for.

You would be surprised. Its called convienence. A mobile is a mobile yet they can do so much than and more than an ipod touch. you can get winrar for a mobile btw

But the simple fact is that it's not something that is being massively demanded by the general public. The Appstore already massively outsells other software for mobile devices and the iPhone makes up a small percentage of phones. Most people are more than happy to let iTunes manage their music then when they're out and about they just listen to the tracks they have with them or buy from the store. If a developer wanted to produce an app that allowed you to unzip files and manipulate them in some fashion then they'd be more than welcome. Personally I've never had to unzip a music file and can easily see why it's not something Apple would include as a feature. There are plenty of things apple could add to their devices but with a few exceptions most of them would just confuse people, just because it could do something doesn't mean it should.
Harry, it sucks

There are a hell of lot of mobiles that can't do anything like what you are saying. Smartphones can, but then they are not just mobiles, they are mini-computers.
If this is the main functionality you want from your music player I don't think an iPod is for you...
