But if they axe Countdown then are they really going to find something better to replace it? The last thing we need is more repeats of A Place in the Sun...

ratings are falling..dont think it will survive much longer
past its sell by date now
Some people think Countdown should have been axed when Richard Whiteley died (as it was his show). I'm pleased Channel 4 has kept the show running. I believe that's what Richard would have wanted.

I don't agree that it's past its sell-by date - quite the opposite in fact Rachel and jeff have breathed new life into the show and I think it's at its best right now. Certain people (wonder who??) just want the show to fail and are gutted that some of us actually prefer it nowadays.

I was reading the TV blog on Channel4.com and the head of C4 daytime said Countdown was here to stay.

I never doubted that Countdown was going to be axed. I'm glad it's here to stay.

I wish Jeff Stelling would stop mentioning his height, or lack thereof, in every show. I neither know nor care how tall or short he is, and I doubt that anybody else cares either; the repetition is tiresome. Shame because he's a decent host otherwise; much better than that dreadful Whiteley man.

He is far less self-deprecating now than when he first started. I too, found it tiresome. But now I think he is one of the most polished presenters the programme has had of recent years. I also had doubts about Rachel in the beginning. But she has more than delivered in the numbers field, and proved she is more than just eye-candy. This must be the strongest Countdown team since Richard Whitely.

Is Rachel Riley engaged now?

I haven’t seen every episode over the last few weeks. I was watching her on Friday (checking her out while she put the numbers up, as usual) and all of a sudden I noticed a ring on her wedding finger!

Was this announced on the show? I can’t find any mention of the engagement on the Web.

If it’s true, this is going to seriously spoil the programme for me. It just wouldn’t be Countdown without a beautiful, unmarried vital statisticial to drool over!

I can't afford to be that fussy.

A question about the rules, for those who understand these things.

I pressed my imaginary buzzer after five seconds on today's conundrum, having seen the word, 'sceptered' (as in, 'this sceptered isle'). Neither contestant buzzed so after thirty seconds the word was revealed to be, 'respected'.

So if I had been a real contestant, would my answer have been accepted, and if so would they have re-taped it so that 'sceptered' became the revealed word instead of 'respected'?

Isn't it spelled as 'sceptred' ?

And even if it is correct, your answer would not have been accepted. There is only ever one acceptable correct answer AFAIK. (I can't seem to recall them having a conundrum with two possible correct answers, although I think there must have been a few occasions where this happened).

That's not correct.

When the conundrum has multiple possible solutions (as long as they fit the rules of the game), any of those solutions can be used.

I'd imagine they'd reveal the one they were aiming for and then say something like "However, word x is also valid".

This has happened a few times, although I've never seen it.

I never knew that!

Has anyone got an example of such a situation?

Thanks, you are indeed correct on the spelling. I checked my big dictionary - the one that's so heavy I can hardly carry it, and it tells me that the British English spelling is 'sceptred', with the U.S. spelling being 'sceptered'. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Daveoc64 sounds fairly confident on the multiple possible answers issue so I'll believe that to be the case, so thanks to you also for clearing that one up.

Ahh, I didn't know that. I've often wondered what they'd do if the conundrum made more than one word. I got outheard today - although Suzie got authored. Slow-ish without a whiz like Jimmy around. Can't warm to Rory this week - he always looks a bit sweaty and creepy! How dare he embarrass our Jeff implying he's a pothead! lol!

This page clarifies the rules:

http://www.askoxford.com/wordgames/c...rules/?view=uk

Quote:
"The conundrum is basically a 9-letter word shuffled up. The first person to buzz in and solve the anagram gets 10 points. As a general tip, conundrums only ever have one answer. This means that as the letters CHARTSORE could yield both ORCHESTRA and CARTHORSE then they would not be used on the show. We also never use 8-letter plurals."

Ah, so you were correct that there is only ever one answer. Thanks. I hereby nominate you as the official DS Countdown guru.

I don't think 'outheard' is a word, is it?

I actually quite like Rory on this, it makes a change for the guest to be interested in language and words.

I had to check, but it's in definitely in my big fat Scrabble dictionary!
