Well done to Jonathan. That seemed a ridiculously obscure word for the conundrum. Not remotely surprised neither got it.

Must confess I had to look it up.

When it was revealed it looked like the letters were still jumbled up!

I'd feel a bit peeved if I were Mathew. That conundrum was on a whole other level of obscurity than any I've eve seen on the show. Neither had a chance, the quiz was effectively over the end of the previous round.

Yes, don't they usually (or quite often anyway) have some sort of cutely "apposite" word for the grand final conundrum, like VICTORIOUS (I know that's not nine letters before anybody says )?

Yes that happens sometimes. Other times it is like today where they mix it into something appropriate. These top players do know obscure words so it was not impossible that one of them would know it.

Does the Horse Racing moving to ITV mean more Countdown episodes per year?

“Channel 4, which has broadcast racing for more than 30 years, will show 91 days of racing in 2016, concluding with the Challow Hurdle meeting at Newbury on 31 December.”

so that will be a lot of week slots I guess, although Countdown Has seemed to have been moved back to 3:10pm slot, so maybe it wouldn't be moved off quite so much this year.

Hopefully this should be really good news though it doesn't start until 2017 so no difference this year.

On Friday show Nick mentioned David Bowie at the start of the show. As they are prerecorded what would have happened if his talk about David Bowie was today.

He could only talk about his hits from the 80s.

I just find it terribly frustrating that in this era of mutli channel TV we have to lose programmes like Countdown in order to accommodate sport. The whole flaming point of digital technology is that everyone an be catered for.

Indeed, it's one of my pet peeves that shows like Countdown still attempt to maintain the illusion that they are 'live', when just about everyone knows that they record five episodes a day several weeks earlier.

The most annoying thing is when they do a 'Monday' show but the dictionary corner guest is still the same from the previous Friday, so you know they've just had lunch or a coffee or whatever but we have to put up with all the faux 'had a good weekend, Rachel?' stuff.

Such a cocky shite this young guy on now. He's just like the guy in school who finishes all the exam questions before anyone else and makes sure everyone else notices. I want to punch him.

Quite often they change their clothes as well....they must have to pack 4 sets of cloths.

Which can be nice when Rachel wears a nice dress...today's was quite nice.....

I used to think it was live, in the 90s.............

A bit disappointed they didn't make more of an effort for Rachel's birthday after getting her the special shirt from Ryan Giggs for her 1,000th show, not even a cake this time.

It was probably filmed back in November.

Andy's losing score of 125 today would seem to be a new record. Previously it was 117 according to http://wiki.apterous.org/List_of_Countdown_records.

Also the highest-scoring crucial conundrum.

(That's assuming champion-of-champions series matches count).

He doesn't say whether that was during the conception or delivery.

Fantastic game today. I missed about a weeks worth of this as I was away so not sure who else we've got coming up but today's winner looks worthy of being the eventual 'Champion of Champions' or whatever the actual title will be.

It was a terrific game yesterday, but Dylan's "I'm also the record holder" comment when Nick didn't mention it was truly cringe-worthy. Nick's riposte was sweet.

Very much enjoying the Champion of Champions so far. Breathtaking standard across the board.

Rachel misspelt 'weirdo', on the board...it's a common mistake...i before e except with some words.

Again, another A1 calibre game today, says a lot when the loser also gets into three figures! Have to agree with the other comments about Dylan, though - Tracey seems down to earth, and even Dan seems to have calmed down since his previous series.
