Haha, good capture.. if only this happened (don't click if easily offended, nsfw) once though.

How are the ratings for countdown nowadays? Have the new presenters brought in more since des or less?
Or this that actually did happen. Ha ha. Richard Whiteley's face is a picture and Gyles Brandreth's comment was very quick and witty.

Countdown auditions
Can anyone who's applied for/been on Countdown tell me something about what the auditions involve, or how difficult it is to get on? I think about having a go every now and then.

Presumably you have to do a few numbers games or conundrums?
I attended a London audition about 8 years ago which was pretty tough in those days. It was conducted by a programme researcher and, i think, one of the producers and consisted of the usual games used in the programme.

There were three other contestants who were playing at the same time who had been on other shows and unfortunately my numbers let me down.

However I reckon the standard is a lot lower now and they prob would have put me on the show as i got top marks in the letters and got both conundrums correct!

Good Luck!

Can't stand Countdown now Carol has left - the new girl is extremely self-conscious and has the personality of one of the Countdown tiles. The show is over for me.

Seeing Carol on The Apprentice: You're Fired earlier made me glad she wasn't on Countdown any more - just because of that awful laugh!

I thought it was just me!

That laugh is annoying, Jeff & Rachel are much better the show has life in it again, IMO.

It certainly has not got better. Jeff and Rachel have zero personality. He is completely wrong for this show. There is no way this programme will continue for another 25 years.
I would give it no more then 2 more years.

He he I loved Gino. He used to drive Carol mad, as he often used to ask for specific 'numbers'. I remember Carol had great difficulty working out what he meant when he wanted the ones that were on each end of the rows of smaller numbers.
Nice (though somewhat old! - 1993) article about Gino.

Rachel looks amazing this week. It's hard to concentrate on the letters with her stood there!
Yes yes yes, I agree Rachel is getting better all the time and this week her dresses were great
Keep it up, Rachel

Rachel does a reasonably good job I think, but Jeff Stelling is absolutely terrible. Still the game is the important thing and I still enjoy playing along. I'm not sure that Countdown is attracting such good guest these days either. I hope it survives and that the next host will be an improvement.

Jeff really needs to ease up on the "sleazy older man / young girl" thing, and the "she's young, she won't know anything I talk about from before around 1990" themes he has going with Rachel, it's just not funny any more.

I've heard the viewing figures have fallen quite a bit this year, since they took over, does anyone know what they were/are?

Thanks for that.

It's a shame, but I suspect that a lot of the audience were older and simply haven't taken to the new presenters.

Hopefully though it's cheap enough to produce that lower audiences don't matter (yet).

I've been trying to think who the current chamption, Cate, reminds me of, and I've realised it's Mrs Raven from the TV programme "My Hero". Anyone else see the resemblance?

A lot of them have probably died and a quiz show based on numeracy and literacy where you can't win a million quid doesn't appeal to the younger generation.
I'm a Vorder-man and was less than impressed with the new girl when the revamped show started. As Carol is irreplaceable i would have gone with new technology and had a computer generate the letters and number eliminating the need for a new girl.It would save money too.
I've no idea how much it costs to produce but i'd be surprised if Jeff Stelling came cheap.

What a nice surprise to see Jerry Springer as the guest in dictionary corner today. Jerry's not at all like his talk show persona, he's naturally witty and charming and I always enjoy watching him on UK shows. Finally on her 8th day, he even managed to cheer Mrs. sour face up a bit!

There has been some praise for Rachel's 'bum-hugging' dresses (and with good reason) but her yellow cardigan today shows off her other assets very nicely indeed.

Used to be a "must-see" programme for me. Now watch it very occasionally, as today, but wonder why I bothered. The new "team" seem to be doing a job, whereas Carol and Richard ( and also Des O'Connor) seemed to be there because they enjoyed it - if that makes sense.

That's what they said about Taggart after Mark Mc Manus died and it's still going as strong as ever!

Des O'Connor and the other Des were BORING and dull and seemed to be there for the money whereas Jeff looks happier and seems to enjoy himself and Rachel's not as mouthy as Carol and doesn't have Carol's awful laugh!!!

I agree SylviaB, I could not stand Carol's laugh which seemed very forced to me anyway
Jeff and Rachel are settling in well I think

I liked Cate, mainly for the fact that, although she was very good, she wasn't too pleased with herself like Kirk Bevins had been; and all those eight (and occasional nine) letter words she came up with were actually ones that normal human beings had heard of! (She was a bit scary though, I must admit!)

I'm a new member so just wanted to say hello to everybody before I begin.

It was a shame to hear about the falling Countdown ratings for March but does anyone know if they have picked up at all? How low would they have to fall before C4 started to think about the future of the show, if they haven't started already?

I'm a massive fan of Jeff and had never really watched Countdown before he took on the role of presenter but he has turned me into an avid viewer of the show, something I never thought I would be. I am loving Jerry Springer this week, very funny guy.

He has only set up the competition, not read any out yet. I guess it will take a few weeks because they film in advance etc.
