I don't think it's a matter of using the word but the patterns that form from the selection of letters, if "vitriolic" the way they arranged the letter I maybe would have read that in a novel and not even noticed the wrong spelling.
"Loudmouth" by contrast was close to several other words and nothing jumped out at all so it was a case of trying to rearrange the letters "manually" which is why I didn't beat the contestant to it - well done on that one.
I think there's a lot of self training in doing the conundrum and Countdown in general. When I first started watching it took me several weeks to get my first conundrum but once I got the first it became much easier. "Loudmouth" was the first time is several weeks that I haven't got it, most would have been within a couple of seconds at most.
