And Carol Vorderman has been nominated for Rear of the Year. Do they not watch Countdown?!

If I had half an hour alone with Rachel, I would be doing both interlapping and underlapping.

They obviously do but are a few years out of date. Carol used to wear tight leather trousers and when she turned to the board , bumtastic!, she was interviewed once on some chat show and when this was mentioned she said that if you googled her name it was all about bums.

The problem is that Carol's bum is about the same size as a horses' arse .........

Dictionary Corner failed to come up with a possible 8 in Round 2: DAINTIER and, worse, in Round 4: ENROLLER - worse because they did come up with ENROLL. Both my suggestions are in the Countdown dictionary.

Somebody up-thread asked about Nick who I think is doing an excellent job now that a few rough edges have been smoothed off.”

Not possible yesterday - she was nattering on with Nick between rounds as well.

Nick's doing well but the tractor gag with Rachel is getting old. Sometimes he's off with Susie on OoW. Depends on the mood he's in.

Yes, he's settled in, got in to a groove, found his footing, yaddayaddayadda, but imvho he's not what you'd call lovable. Harsh might be too strong a word but fun, well fun he aint. Though maybe I'm just missing something.

btw (might have asked this before... but) -> when they're doing the conundrum and someone buzzes in, does the displayed letter jumble immediately go blank so to not allow the buzzerinnie those few extra moments to confirm their answer - I'm vaguely reminded of one contestant who said it was COMBINED when it actually was COMBINES, something those few extra moments could have been used to tweak their answer*

* and yes (1) I know COMBINED/COMBINES don't have enough letters but hopefully you get the idea and (2) I've kinda disproved my "they could cheat" fear since that person obviously DIDN'T use those extra mo's to tweak his answer - but still, I'm curious.

btw2: in the numbers game can we (1) use 2s and 3s to square and cube things and (2) are fractions allowed ?

Agree. But in no way shape or form could it be ever described as 'saggy'!

Clearly disallowing all mass noun plurals would satisfy you. The game could be played this way, and indeed it was for a while after the NODE replaced the Concise Oxford in 2000. One of the first signs of trouble came when LAGERS had to be disallowed. That is explainable, if a little bizarre as everyone knows you can order a trayful of lagers from any bar in the country. But it gets weirder still when you find that mass nouns with very similar definitions, like brandy and whisky, do have their plural forms specified simply because the words end in -y. It's safe to assume that if LAGER took an irregular plural this would have been been specified, and so you have the "things you could order individual servings of" guideline. Generally it makes sense, although some of the results (TRIPES for example) are harder to swallow than others.

Countdown has a few hundred thousand viewers most of whom are not word-game aficionados, and as a TV entertainment show, it has to follow rules which make it credible to the majority. American spellings used to be allowed - people complained. Disallowing perfectly good English words whose use is supported by the dictionary won't be popular.
