Does anyone have the above stereo system - radio tuner, tape deck and three-tray cd system?
Have had it for quite a few years now - and the three cd trays seem to have gone out of alignment - so when you put a cd in any of the trays it doesn't register and just shows 00:00:00 on the LCD and won't play.
Does anyone know a way to fix this?
It's very frustrating and am on the point of dumping the whole stereo! Cheers!

Most probably a laser issue. Either that or an accumalation of crud on the laser. Worst case is the laser has simply worn out due to old age. And yes lasers do wear out! Essentially what happens is the power output drops over time. Eventually falling below the level where the detectors can reliably read the disc.

If it is gunge on the laser than a wipe with a cotton bud lightly dampened with isopropol alcohol (can get it from places like Maplin) or even plain tap water may restore it. But make sure the bud is barely damp certainly not dripping wet if you use water. Then finish off with a dry bud. And be gentle with it. pressing too hard will cause terminal damage to the mechanism.

This of course assumes you can get at the laser. If not then there are cleaning discs available which have a brush attachment that cleans the laser as the disc spins. Not sure how effective these are as I have only ever taken the lid off and used a cotton bud myself on the CD players I've maintained.

However if cleaning has no effect then the laser itself could be dead. You might be able to get a replacement, but if you have to pay labour to someone to do it then you could be looking at a bill larger than the cost of going down Comet or Currys and buying a new one!

It all depends on whether the tray the CDs load into is a slide out one or you lift a lid to access the tray. If it is a slide out type then the laser will be buried inside the unit. OK if you like using a screwdriver and taking things apart.

If it is a lid type then some open up fully exposing the laser carriage, might have to turn the CD carrier to find it. With that type it would be easy to clean the laser. But as I said be gentle with it. Most are mounted in a spring arrangement so do move a little as you wipe them but use a very light touch otherwise you'll do more harm than good. And if it is just dirt then all you've wasted is a cotton bud or two.
