ITV - Spain vs England - Another ITV Cock Up

Billed as HD, transmitted as SD only.

So far as SD concerned, 1/2 the cameras in the stadium transmitting in 16:9 widescreen format, other 1/2 in 4:2 square format.

All in appauling quality.

Where was it billed as being in HD?

And, as has been said on the other thread, the picture quality, aspect ratio etc. has damn all to do with ITV.

and i suppose the adverts 56 minutes in will not be there fault?

The pictures are provided by TVE, the host broadcasters. Pictures are terrible, but it's the fault of TVE and not ITV.

The poor score right now is due to England and not ITV. There's one goal that I would have preferred to watch an advert instead!

Yea, they should pay for a non-existent HD feed with 5.1 sound...

TVE aren't filming those bits. ITV are.

As far as I know, with most football matches there is only one host provider and all broadcasters use the same pics. Unfortunately, TVE are filming the match on domestic camcorders.

On the EPG - and that is still the case now.

Anyone who set it to record the HD version now has a failed recording.

Just about everywhere including Radio Times. ITV HD is total cr*p. A bit ironic that at the beginning of the programme they were plugging the FA Cup. Yes they have the FA Cup in HD but FA else!

Changed on my EPG at about 2pm earlier this afternoon - HD logo was removed when EPG updated.

Do they (TVE) supply the pictures for Champions League games in Spain?- those are required to be in HD - AFAIK

Hmmm, not really sure to be honest.
As a complete hunch, I's suggest that the host for such matches might be Canal+. This is as they list Champs League on their website. (http://englishtv.plus.es/ofertadigitalplus/deporte.php). They also seem to have the only HD channels on Hispasat, their main orbital slot for DTH TV.

TVE don't seem to be doing anything in HD right now, not as far as I can see anyway.

It was billed as HD on several programme websites and in the Satelite programme schedule magazine I buy.

It was ITV / TVE at fault Mark. My tv wasn't changing the aspect ratio, the aspect ratio was changing as ITV / TVE cut between cameras leaving black bars down the side for some pictures and full widescreen for others.

The picture was also blurry in places (static not movement). I only watched the players come out BTW as I'd already seen enough by then!

The only TV stations in Spain with real HD capability at the moment are Digital+ (equivalent to Sky) and Catalan telly (TVC) in Barcelona.

Most terrestrial TV is also still transmitted in 4:3, so the ITV HD cock-up is probably due to not being able to obtain an HD signal from the host broadcaster.

It will be interesting to know what kind of contract ITV had with Spanish TV, companies who are not motivated in terms of technical quality but purely in terms of earnings through advertising.

In the UK we are very lucky to have BBC R&D as the driving force behind the technical advancements in broadcasting quality - everyone else has to fight to keep up with them.

So why did ITV advertise it everywhere in HD? Were they just guessing?

Maybe they were plannng to take their own HD camera crew and the guys missed the plane to Seville
