Legendary bands that have not recorded a “must have” / “essential” album?
There are certain bands, that if I were asked by a listener new to them what they should hear, some, such as The Beatles, I would feel compelled to recommend several albums, whereas others, Oasis for example, there is only one album that I would consider a must listen.
Obviously to a die-hard fan of particular bands almost everything might seem essential; but realistically, to the casual listener, if a studio album is not exceptional or accessible; they would surely be better off with a Best of package. The band that struck me as the one whom I would not be able to recommend a studio album of, are The Cure. As much as I love several of their albums; I don’t believe that I would be willing to recommend one as absolutely essential to anyone not familiar with their work, nor to anyone that already likes some of their singles. Of course, if you find the right starting place with certain bands, all of their must might suddenly become essential to you! |

In lieu of one of the singles compilations, surely Faith or Pornography would be a good start? However, the bleakness of Faith may shock those who only know them for 'The Lovecats'!

I'd also recommend Disintegration as the essential starting point for anyone not familiar with The Cure.
(The Head on the Door is probably my personal favourite album though) |

What!!! Are you crazy? Disintegration is the best album ever!! Also for the early stuff Boys Don't Cry doesn't have a bad track on it.
As for the original question I'd say someone coming newly to Jamiroquai would do better with a best of compilation then any individual album. The first 3 would all have been classics if they'd each been cut down by 20mins. |

The Kinks. Greatest Hits is essential but their albums are obscure, unless you're really into them.

I would also consider Disintegration the most obvious choice for a Cure masterwork.

Me too. Disintegration is balanced enough between upbeat tracks, quirky ones and depressing songs. It's a sort of catch-all for the Cure's style.
Albums like Faith and Pornography may be too depressing for a first-time or casual listener and something like The Top or Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me would be too quirky. The Head on the Door is a very accessible album as well. A lot of people have probably heard Inbetween Days or Close To Me. |
