I say "possible new bug" because (a) it might be a fresat problem, and (b) it might not be new and I simply don't remember reading about it.

I started a thread in the freesat forum concerning selecting audio when using the BBC Red Button service (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=989774). Sky users have reported what happens on Sky. That doesn't neccesarily mean that the same thing should happen on a freesat box but, thinking about it, I'm inclined towards it being a HDR bug.

It's the "no entry" icon that is displayed when the audio button is pressed that make me suspect a bug. With a normal channel, even when there is only a single audio stream present, the HDR's audio select button always works. If it is possible for interactive streams to have alternative audio, one would expect the button to be operative even if it only shows a single audio stream present.

Of course, it still might be a freesat issue. I would be interested to know whether the audio select button on other freesat boxes is operative when viewing an interactive stream.

On other platforms sky/freeview the audio option is only available by using a different coloured button it is a software driven interaction. The audio button on the foxy is not the same as using say the blue button to select sound variants. I believe this service under the red button is not currently suported by the BBC for freesat

The interactive applications cannot take control of the audio selection button (the ability to do it is not in the MHEG standard). An MHEG application can change the audio track itself using any of the other buttons available (such as R,G,Y,B,0-9,Back,U,D,L,R,Ok).

The News Multiscreen uses the Up,Down,Left,Right keys to select audio tracks.

Thanks, Bob_Cat. That makes things a little clearer. Presumabaly, BBC made a mistake yesterday in having the words "Select Audio" in the caption - a mistake they corrected today. It would be nice if BBC would implement this feature on freesat, though. I would like to chose the commentary.

Basically the audio switcher is not currently available on Freesat - the aim was to have the new functionality ready for the Six Nations along with Sky and Freeview, however there were some bugs in our Freesat code at the last minute that meant it couldn't go up.

The reason you're seeing some instructional text telling you you can change the audio is because the configuration system can't put different content out on different platforms - the same text has to go out to Sky, Freesat and Virgin Media. This isn't ideal at all.

The good news is that it should only be a short term problem - the code that works all this will go live in the next few weeks once it's been fully tested and all the bugs resolved.

However I can't tell you yet if it will be available during the Six Nations - I'll check on the estimated launch date when I'm in the office tomorrow.
