Crikey, it looks better than most of the Bill Baggs BBV films.

I honestly can't see the BBC letting this run for 13 full episodes. Anyone want to run a book on how soon the project will be shut down? (I give it a month, tops.)

It's only fan fiction, there are plenty of cheaper versions on youtube.

The BBC tolerates the fan films on YouTube, but it's not obliged to do so.

This is a step up from most fan films. This is a professional-looking series of 13 full episodes, not a pair of eccentrics 'performing' some shoddy playtime skit in a TARDIS made of boxes.

I genuinely do want to see this project completed. However, I don't believe the BBC will tolerate a fan project on this scale.

I like the sound of the episode titles - very who-esque

If they were the titles of series 5 you wouldnt question it

Well done on the team for making this, so much effort has gone into it!

Given that this first episode will likely air on the same day as Planet of The Dead, I expect the BBC to stop it.

The quality does look exceptional, but somehow I think it will be cancelled. They could submit it as something else, being very like DW, but with the beeb owning the copyright to the Police Box, they might need to reshoot some of it.

But well done.

Some of them aren't that shoddy but I see what you mean. Still don't realise why they'd have a problem, it's non-profit and just a bit of fun. They could always argue that it's a drama project, I'm sure the beeb'd understand.

Wow, i'm actually very impressed! How will we be able to view it? Just through the site, or will we be able to download the episodes?

Not if it turns out it's better than their productions.

Looking forward to this, hope it will be good, it will be nice to see a fan made production that isn't just fuill of Mary-Sue type characters. Production values look pretty good as well.

Presunably it will be OK - but then again I recall watching an episode parody called Dr Screw on the adult channel. Shocking!!!!!!

this looks great, the BBC better not shut this down! I can't see the problem with it, it gives the fans something to watch while doctor who is having it's gap year.

BBC (Worldwide) Enterprises are already aware of it. Writs have been sent already, it's not going anywhere.

Seems a lot of money had already been invested in the project, but no-one has bothered to obtain *any* rights permisions.

Where did you hear that?

If the project has been shut down, I suspect it was because the makers were effectively using the Doctor Who brand to produce showreels for their own careers:

Quote:
“2.2: If it's non-profit making, how are these productions financed?

Through a mixture of money straight from the producers' pockets, along with the valuable time given to us by various highly creative individuals (writers, actors and behind the scenes crew) many of whom either do this sort of thing for their day job or are hoping to carve out a career in their area of expertise. Doctor Who 2009 aims to bring many young professionals into the spotlight.”

At what point should the BBC differentiate between fans having a lark on YouTube and professionals/semi-professionals infringing copyright with a major webcasting venture? Could Joss Whedon, for example, spend his personal fortune on a series of Doctor Who webcasts and use the "just a bit of fun" defence because he's not making a direct profit?

They should have redesigned the TARDIS interior

Be good if he could.

Seems the whole thing is a bit more international than I thought with at least a couple of people invoolved in it being based in England.

Strictly speaking, if you do a little Dr Who play/video for a group, or distribution, even non-profit, the BBC are within their rights to threaten to sue those responsible for driving the project.

Occasionally a local group will do a special one-night of a West End show, totally for fun/charity, only for them to be threatened with legal action.

Generally, organisations turn a blind eye to small one-off events, but this was far, far too well produced and the BBC jumped on it.

Even non-profit the organisers MUST consult the owners of the rights of the various aspects/trade marks & copyrights before even *considering* such a production. They didn't.

Put simple... Remember FOX paid a huge figure for the American+ rights to the McGann film, according to the organisers behind this, FOX could have made it non-profit and therefore saves on rights costs !!!!! I don't think so, given the potential profits drivers and by-product spin offs that may come from it !

Indeed, small theatre groups have even been threatened with legal action for performing pantomimes of public domain stories which use certain elements (songs, costume designs) created exclusively for the Disney adaptations.

Where did you hear Doctor Who 2009 had been shut down, swadey?

Let's face it, the Beeb shut down someone selling Adipose knitting patterns.

On the other hand, Paramount has tolerated Star Trek:New Voyages and other fan series.

I'm sure the makers of Star Trek: New Voyages didn't just plough ahead and spend a fortune without making sure they at least had the goodwill of the copyright holder. (Although goodwill can be revoked on a whim.) That appears to be exactly what the people behind Doctor Who 2009 have done.

Let's face it, anything made without a licencing agreement can be pulled - without warning - at any time. The BBC could have every unauthorised Doctor Who video removed from YouTube tomorrow.

I think it is a bit much really, I don't want random Americans making their own episodes really I think it detracts from the real show.
It'd be different if it did seem "a bit of fun" but that site looks well professional and I suspect that they are using it to further their own careers really.
Also it winds me up the whole we are supporting Unicef thing, how? Just by saying you are doesn't mean you actually are.
