Also it winds me up the whole we are supporting Unicef thing, how? Just by saying you are doesn't mean you actually are.”

The lack of actual support is conveniently hidden away in a small print disclaimer at the bottom of the page, along with the details of the project's unofficial status.

The project looks really good, but I'm surprised at the cheek and the naivety of the people involved. It seems like a lot of talented people have spent much time and money on at least three episodes of a series that will probably never see the light of day.

Don't take this too seriously, has anyone read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page?

Copyright infringments just by looking at the website for 5 minutes:

Title (just suffixing "2009" on the end isn't sufficient!)

Logo

Set Designs

Characters (well, the titular character at least!)

After watching the trailer:

United Nations Intelligence Taskforce is name-checked

And as for "classic scenes remade"

Music

Story titles

Story elements

(Also, name-checking the author's name is not sufficient to imply no intention of infringement)

for "The Claws of Axos", they even use copyrighted BBC material both in its original form and also a pointlessly-modified "hey look at this, see what we can do, aren't we cool?" form!

...but hey, let's not criticise, because it's FAN MADE (their emphasis, they must think that typing it in block capitals makes a difference) and they support charity (by telling everyone else to make donations) as justification that it's a worthy deed. The money they've wasted on this would have used far better by UNICEF or any charity you care to mention. The further down this post I get, the angrier I get!

Wait a moment, they're American.

Let's criticise!

First Paramount and now CBS can show tolerance of Star Trek: New Voyages/Phase II, which is even using unmade scripts from the series. LucasFilm actually encourages Star Wars fan films. As do the makers of Red Dwarf - who even put some of them on one of the DVDs. If the BBC can't show some slack it proves what boring old farts they are.

That doesn't compare at all. I can't imagine Fox giving away brand new episodes of DW for nowt. They're a business for gawds sake.

Those examples are all goodwill gestures. Any of those rights holders would be legally entitled to purge the net of all fan films tomorrow if they so wished.

The makers of Doctor Who 2009 have been extremely naive to plough ahead with the series without confirming the goodwill of BBC Wales. It seems crazy to spend so much time and money making a hugely ambitious project (they're up to episode 3, apparently) when you know how protective the rights holder is.

It is strange isnt it ?

To use a phrase I can't abide but.. is it just me or does this whole thing have a whiff of fishiness about it, not sure what, but something feels out of place. And as you said 'be more Pacific' surely no one can be that naive to infringe on so many copyrights, and thats just on the web site, let alone the actual project, time will tell I suppose.

My thoughts on the trailer, for what it's worth, it looks like God awful soulless pap.

A BBC viral marketing campaign perhaps?

The thought crossed my mind, albeit briefly, only to be replaced by the adage:

"Never ascribe to conspiracy that which is more easily explained by human stupidity"

(or something along those lines )

That is so poor. I'd just like to say I am supporting Red Nose Day, can you all give them your money please?
What a load of nonsense!

I'm thinking more along the lines of stupidity/lack of forethought/research into what does and does not breach copyright.

It could be interesting, but I can't see this making the 13 epsiodes they have written.

From the actual website...."As reported on December 28th, our first trailer was awarded 18th most viewed film/animation on YouTube in the Czech Republic."

High praise indeed

Just imagine what kind of delights 1 - 17 must have been

They're bloody lucky it's only the BBC going after them, and not Unicef. I think they'd be in a lot more trouble by falsely using the logo of a charity they've got nothing to do with.

Awarded?

Are the makers planning to add the words "award-winning production" to their CVs and showreels?

The thing is, has anyone else actually watched any of the stuff that the main guy has already done? He's got bits and bobs up on YouTube, including recreations of classic Doctor Who scenes with himself as the Doctor. They're, erm, not good.

[Edited to add]Here's one[/edit]

Nice bit of raised eyebrow acting, there. He has clearly added depth to the scene by having the Doctor taunt the Cyberleader over his eyebrowless face.

I just posted

That looks like a haiku, bet he doesn't keep it there though, there are NO negative comments.

If I post
You suck

do you think it would balance out?

Got admire the sheer cheek of the disclaimer tho. 'No infringement is intended'
Pretty much the same as saying I didn't intend to steal these items officer, I just decided to walk out of the shop without paying for them

Forget ripping off Doctor Who, I think they have a natural talent for comedy if they can state that with a straight face and heads held high

Reading all these posts before i checked the site, i assume it was a big budget production.

Have people actually looked at the site/videos? The trailer is badly acted, looking at the images of the filming, it looks as though it's actually shot on a tiny camcorder, something your mum might take on holiday.

They're probably kids on a Media course who got access to some equipment.

I don't think the beeb need worry about this somehow

The trailer is well edited definitely, but everything else seems a bit pony to me.

The acting and effects may be a bit ropey, but these videos are really no worse than a lot of the 'professionally-made' tat I watch on the Zone Horror channel.
