okay, even though I am officially sulking cause only ONE of my songs made it onto the list, I have to say it's a pretty good selection of songs...DS'ers have pretty good taste in music!

I agree, only 2 of mine are on the list... but I do own and at least like 17 of the 18 songs. Not a bad list at all.

I have to admit I am disapointed, though not surprised, to see so many songs that were at some point force fed to the masses in this list. All are reasonably good tunes, but nearly all are not the best by the artists who recorded/performed them,IMO, let alone some of the best songs of all time. I might vote, but I see the list as half great/half good with a couple of tracks I actually go out of my way to never have to hear because I am so sick of them in the mix.

But how you see them and how other people see them may well be very different things, such is musical opinion....and maybe the reason those songs are played a lot is less about 'force feeding' them to people, but because they are the songs people WANT to hear.

I'm actually very heartened that this list contatins a pretty good mixture of genres and songs from different eras to.

I adore 4 songs on the list, Love will tear us Apart, Baba O Reilly, A day in the life and How soon is now and would definitey consider those songs one of (if not the) best by that band.

I quite like about 5 others songs there and the other half of the list I cna take or leave (and there are 2 songs i despise on it!!).

But i do think as a list, it is a pretty good one - it does have song from lots of different genres and represents varying tastes in music which is a good thing i think in this sort of a game as you have your own one or two songs you can root for!

I still couldnt believe though the most overplayed song on the radio / every break up scene in a teen soap/ death scene in a medical soap.....Chasing Cars made it to the top 18 though!!! But each to their own of course!

I'm pretty pleased I have 13 of the 18 on my iPod. The other 5 nope. And 3 of them, Beyoncé, The Smiths & Radiohead I wouldn't put on with a loaded gun to my head.

Only 1 song made it from my list and that is With or Without You by U2.

It must have been close between certain songs because of the difficulty narrowing it down to a top 18 - especially with the variety of song choices.

Anyway, it is a good enough selection as it represents artists from different decades and from different music genres.

i dont agree.... 95% of those tracks are pretty much the same genre... theres no dance, disco, pure pop, electro, trance, hip hop, soul... its all AOR ... (well ok, jacko n beyonce got through)

but if thats the demograph of ds then so be it!

Rock & Alternative music seems to be a popular choice amongst the DS voters. But if you look out on the music forum, there are many threads about Lady GaGa, Girls Aloud, The Saturdays, Britney Spears etc. and if those fans had voted, we may have had a different list.

Yes it would have been nice to have had some recent songs on the list (there are many worthy recent ones) but it is a good selection none the less. Predictable songs? Maybe. But most of those are classics in their own right.

There is so much out there that many listeners may have never heard because it is not aggressively promoted/not from 'their' era, not from their region or popular in their country, etc.

Most people, even those who love music(which is most people, really) and who believe they 'like a wide variety of music' usually listen to a lot of what is more easily accessable and what it targetted at them in marketing, often without even realizing that thwese factors affect their choices. (It affects mine, yours, everyone with a radio/eyes to see posters/adverts/telly/internet).

As a result, the songs listed are as much a list of 'good songs that the most DS members have been consistently exposed to' as it is a 'best songs' list, if not more so, and the most mainstream/commercial stuff generally
wins.(which is not to say it is less valuable or not as good for being marketted so widely, just that it is more widely recognized and therefore more likely to end up on this list.some of the most commercial songs,I love!).

A good example of this would be if you were to look at 'best band/artist/album' polls from 30/20/10/even 5 years ago, then compare todays.....you will find the 'best' is very much tied to the 'most currently marketed/mainstream', with a few classics and many 'current' favorites in the mix.

Most people, when it comes to music,' eat what they're fed'....and that isn't to say they have inferior taste, just that they likely haven't been exposed to some great music. It's kind of like , if there was a 'best fast food place' poll, I doubt 'Taco Bell' would make a DS poll, because the chain isn't in the Uk()...but believe me, it beats McDonalds/BurgerHell /by a mile. IMO, a lot of songs beat most in the list, and there are probably some amazing songs I'd list if I heard them that I have not heard(YET!), and somewhere in the midst of this rambling there is a point I am trying to make(no, really, there is!)

I also think this poll, though fun, is next to impossible, because we all have favorites that are great that others have not heard.....maybe we should each link to a song or two we feel should have made the list, because I bet we would all discover some great tunes we never heard that way.

I know it's just my opinion , which is why I worded it the way I did, as in 'IMO' and ''I' dislike/avoid' rather than saying the songs are not good just because I dislike them.

(hmmmm....Mozart/Vivadli/Beethoven didn't make this list, I guess they all must suck.)

I think to be fair, when considering 'favorite song' classical compositions are not something that really fits the category comfortably really....or at least the lines are blurred.

Anyway, tons and tons of talented bands, singers, song writers and so on are not represented here.

These sort of things are just a bit of fun and best not taken too seriously.

I could be cross that some excellent records that I adore didn't make the short list, but I think it's better to embrace the list as it stands, flaws and all.

Dude, I was joking, though the 'fitting comfortably/lines blurred' is subjective/relative , which was the point. .

And yeah, I agree, and credit to Marsha for taking on this (frighteningly) daunting task
