pause issue - fix on its way???
timp
16-02-2009
This pause issue (where the box hangs if pausing recorded HD progs) is really starting to annoy me. To clear it you have to power the box right down and wait a few minutes. My Sky+ has never done it, my various DVD recorders have never done it yet my HDR has done it from new (Nov 2008). Bob_Cat has hinted at firmware updates since before Xmas but here it is, Feb, and nothing since last year. Is something ever going to happen or should I be speaking to Argos, getting shot of this thing and spending the money on 2+ years worth of Sky HD?

This sounds like a problem with your stb rather than a firmware bug, if so new firmware won't help. I can pause a HD recording no problem. The sound runs on a little after the picture stops but resuming playback everythings fine. Have you tried a factory reset ?

Not tried a reset, not really felt there should be a need. I'll give it a go tonight - what am I going to lose? only series links? anything?
I'd be a bit disappointed if a new bit of kit is going to need a factory reset. No other consumer electronics I have ever owned has required such a thing - many stbs over the years included.

I have 4 pvrs every single one has occasionly needed a reset due to some data corruption. A pvr is more related to a computer than anything, how many can say they have never had to reboot a computer. A non recording stb is a very different animal. In any case it's always good practice to do this after any firmware upgrade (sometimes essential)

Your not really asking for a reboot though are you, that would just be a power cycle not a factory reset.

Not exactly true a pvr holds much in non volatile ram so power cycle does not rebuild this. On a PC its only the boot sector and bios thats non volatile., if this gets corrupted you are well stuffed. So a reboot on a computer is very similar to a factory reset on a pvr. To make a pvr the same as the computer you would have to have the OS on the HDD which would make HDD upgrades very hard.

If by PVRs you count something like a DVD HDD recorder then having had 3 of them I've never even noticed a factory reset menu item let alone had the need to use one! Same really for SKY+ - kinda like Apple kit - it just works. This one aspect (pause issue) of the Humax is really disappointing, even more so if it's suggesting I've got a duff box.
Thanks for all the input though.

I can also pause HD programmes with out a problem. Why are you so dissapointed about such a small problem though? Surely it's just a minor annoyance, especially if it's only occuring with HD progs?

I wouldn't say this was a major issue with any PVR as they all have teething problems and if that is all thats wrong, then I'd call the Humax a success.

such a small problem?? huh? So I'm watching a prog, phone rings, pause prog, try to unpause the prog and all I get is frozen picture which sticks though several power-offs and only a plug out for 10 minutes lets me carry on where I left off. Not acceptable, sorry! Not in this day and age. My old Sky+ box never needed a factory reset, my Panny DVD-HDD recorders never need it, my computers (Apple now after 25 years of PCs) never need it - why should a 3 month old bit of kit need it FFS?. I'll happily accept it will be fixed with a firmware upgrade but not that its a faulty box. Maybe I should have gone the Sky+ route - cheaper, more HD channels and 'it just works'

I have a friend who is on her 4th Sky+ box, and a daughter who sent there sky+ box back after 3 failures. And I see that Sky are having to replace 50000 pace HD boxes. So much for it kind of just working

My experience has been different obviously. I picked up a spare one a couple of years ago, it was faulty (duff HDD) replaced it with a 250GB drive and used it ever since, no problems. HDD failure is something that happens - trying to cram too much data onto too few platters at too low a cost - shit happens!. Somehow I doubt my 'problem' is a faulty HDD - happy to be proved wrong though. I bet a lot of recent Sky+ problems are down to the recent OTA upgrade that screwed a load of boxes- had me wondering for a while. How old is the Humax design compared with the original (and even the Sky HD) Sky+ boxes??
I'm still convinced it's gonna be fixed with a fw upgrade - if it aint then the box goes back, not my loss. I don't pay £300 quid to beta test some kids university project!

while I'm at it, anyone care to comment on the lack of any firmware upgrades since November, despite Bob_Cat hinting at one coming 'soon' but how there was a 'freeze' over Xmas and the New Year and yet here it is mid Feb and nothing?? I guess the box is perfect and there is nothing to do.

Every person I know whos had Sky has had their box fail only days or a week or two outside of warranty with then ridiculous quotes for repairs. They've also had to frequently reboot. Whether they've been unlucky or not I couldn't really say.

Timp, if you're unhappy with your box you should get it replaced if a reset doesn't cure it.

The problem you are describing is almost certainly unique to you and not a design fault or bug.

Like everyone else on here, I've never suffered it myself and I pause my box all the time, in fact probably around 30 to 40 times a day!!! All I get is a 1 second delay when pausing / unpausing.

As for Firmware updates from Bob Cat, look at the list of bugs (albeit most minor or very intermittent) and look at the list of feature requests. Thats a lot of things to work on.

Which would you prefer, them to rush out Firmware like many gaming patches and have the patch itself cause new bugs or them take their time and get it out properly tested and working? As an ex-gamer who's experienced patches that made things far worse, I know I'd certainly prefer the latter.

Boy.....you are mad aren't you! Wouldn't like to be on the other side of Argos counter when you come in

As others have said they don't have same problem, rather than getting in such a state about it........why don't you just exchange your box??

Mine has lost volume on 3 occasions now and I might need to exchange mine too......waiting a while to see but I'm not going to call the Humax all kinds of names just because mine may have a fault.....it just happens with any purchase doesn't it.

I've had the problem as well, but its a very simple fix for me.

It happens perhaps one time in 5 or 6 when playing back a BBC HD recording. I think its always after the Humax screen saver comes on. When I press Play the sound continues while picture stays frozen.

All I have to do to fix it is to Pause again followed by Play & all is OK.

@timp, just a thought but have you upgraded the HD? Mine is a 1TB WD.

Peggle I can't say I've ever had the sound issue, but when the screensaver has been on you need to press "Play" twice, thats normal.

Once returns you from the screensaver to the programme page, the second time unpauses the recording.

BTW the screensaver is a great addition. It gives me confidence in pausing my box and leaving the room. 5 stars for that Humax.

Yes I know. But I am confirming that on occasions I see the frozen picture stay with the sound continuing after coming out of Pause by pressing Play twice.

I've never been bothered by it as its a very easy fix. The fix is to press Pause (The frozen picture jumps to the point the sound is at & freezes), then press Play (The picture & sound both continue).
