The Beatles - Overrated?

Don't get me wrong i like them, they had some good songs [Let It Be, A Day In The Life, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Eight Days A Week] but i'd choose Motown over them or The Stones. The Stones were better. They are good but not quite as good as all the fuss about them. I know that when the Beatles came along pop music was a new thing but The Beatles weren't the only group to produce great pop records in the early days.

Oh God not another one. There's already a thread on here about 3000,000 pages long arguing the toss. Do we need another? No.

The Stones were not better or even close, in my opinion, and Motown were not a group as I remember, but a record label.

i didn't actually say they were a group did i. i meant i would choose the songs that were made by the label for their many groups over The Beatles. The Beatles were also influenced by the Motown sound as they covered at least 5 of their songs.

whether they were good or not is entirely down to personal taste...if you like that kind of music, you will love them, if you don't, then you won't....

however, no one can argue against the fact they are not only the most successful group ever, but they are (along with Elvis) the most successful artist ever!

whether you like it or not, it's fact

I love their eariler stuff and The Long and Winding Road is one of my favourite songs but I'm not a big fan of their more psychedelic stuff- I know its their most popular material but I'm just not a great fan of it- I think I'd have to get stoned to truely appriciate it!

In terms of cultural significance they were the band that caught the zeitgeist- they may not have been the best or the most talented of that era but, like the Sex Pistols or the Jam or Oasis (**ducks to avoid flying shoes for mentioning Oasis**) there after, they were the band that captured the imagination of the time and that is why they have the aura that they do today- they had IT. There will arguements about whether they live up to that reputation until the end of time (or thereabouts!).

Personally i've no idea why people rate The Beatles so much they are just another boy band to me....but they make people happy so who cares if they are overrated or not?

AAARRRRGHHHH dont EVER refer to the beatles as a boyband

THEY WERE NOT.

to start with, the term boyband was first coined to describe the likes of bros, new kids on the block, take that (early), acts that were just groups of 'boys' who played no instruments or created their own music.

the beatles are/were the first POP GROUP, they created their own music and unlike 99% of other pop groups they evolved. as has been mentioned, they were in the right place at the right time but had the talent to create on what was a blank canvass, a catalogue of music that is still heavily influencial today.

no other group has, or can, cut the new ground that the beatles did, like them or not, they are/were the best pop group ever .

the stones were also very good, sad to see that the recent poll on the greatest songwriters of all time missed off jagger/richard (and ray davis ... sheeeesh!) as they were also 'up there' with the beatles but ultimately not as creative or influencial.

They certainly do not do anything for me.
