Hi, Yesterday I was recording from BBC HD the Nature's Great Events. Apparently the broadcast on BBC1 (SD) is 10 minutes longer and includes the 'how was is shot' footage at the end.

Why can't BBC HD not show the full/same program as on BBC1? Do I now have to record both programs, so I can watch the main part in HD and skip the SD part until the last 10 minutes? Does not make sense to me...

BBC HD don't show the 10 minute SD section of the "Making Of" parts. This 10 minute section (After the main programme) is never in HD so BBC HD don't broadcast it.

(They are only allowed to show brief upscaled clips, all content must be in HD to be allowed on the channel, so i guess they consider 10 minutes SD is too long)

They could have done a better job by splitting the program up in two parts. First 50m part is similar to HD broadcast, and last 10m part as a separate program on BBC1 only. That way you can record the 2nd part separately as well.

However not to broadcast 10 minutes of a program because that is not in full HD is not a consistent decision, and in my opinion silly, as in other programs certain elements are not in HD either.

You miss the point - the main (proper) programme is a 50min one. The "making of" programme is a separate one. They did a similar format with Planet Earth I believe. As the second programme is wholly SD, they do not broadcast it on the HD channel.

But clearly it isn't a separate programme because you cannot record it separately which maybe they should have allowed you to do.

nope, didn't miss the point as it was broadcasted as one single program with the same name on both channels. There was no prior knowledge that 'one version' would differ from the 'other version' as I initially thought that the guide was in error regarding 10m time difference.

I think it’s because the BBC think we like watching Jool's Holland over and over again.

There have been other instances of BBC HD programmes being shorter than the equivalent SD programmes...

I watched it on HD and didn't realise I missed the 'how it was made' bit and thats a shame as I enjoyed watching it before.....really interesting.

Wasn't that scenery brilliant though......thats what HD is all about for me
