Why are all the media referring to her as "Welsh singer" Duffy? Why not "English band" Coldplay?

I think it should be British singer Duffy and British band Coldplay. Personally, I hate Duffy and her music and Coldplay is my favourite band. Got all their records (CD's), none of Duffy's she gets up my nose. Can't believe that Coldplay didn't win a single Brit, oh well, who has the world's biggest selling record hmm Viva la Vida, Coldplay and whats eh Rockferry well its 5th I believe.

Snow Patrol are Irish, but they formed in Scotland. I've actually never heard them being referred to as Scottish .

No one ever says that Oasis is English because the Gallagher brothers identify as British, Irish and/or Mancunian, almost never English. Andy Bell is Welsh anyway.

The point I'm making is Welsh, Scottish or any other nationality bands are identified as such, but English bands never are.

"Welsh rockers" Stereophonics but never "English popstars" Girls Aloud.

The reason is that Welsh, Scottish and Irish have a national identity whereas the English don't! You're too regionalised.

Look at the BBC. They make programmes for BBC Scotland, BBC Wales and BBC Northern Ireland, but when do they make programmes for BBC England?

Also, you can't refer to Girls Aloud as "English popstars" because Nadine Coyle is Irish.

There's a wee joke that when Andy Murray is winning he's British, and when he's losing he's Scottish

That makes no sense as to why the media feels compelled to point out the nationalities.

Also, you can't refer to Girls Aloud as "English popstars" because Nadine Coyle is Irish.
And it's never "English band" Sugababes.

I think the most realistic answer is that because most of the major media is based in England, they look at it from that respect, and therefore wouldnt say English band Coldplay because they are in England.

Of course, you also sometimes get Scouse band X and Geordie singer Y, so it might just be regionalised when it can be.

It makes sense to say 'Welsh singer' because a) it's a selling point, b) Welsh people are proud of coming from Wales.

Because the population of England make up 90% of the UK and so it's not as big as a selling point as being from Wales/Scotland.

Yep. Wales has a population of 3 million, which is less than half of London's population (7.5m)

I've noticed that English people tend to identify themselves by region first, country second. Mancs, Scousers, Geordies etc. Whereas we Welsh are just Welsh.

So why in today's press which were talking about the brits made no reference to the regions of any of the English acts?

The thing is you're talking about the English based media. With the English media the assumption is that everyone mentioned is English unless otherwise identified. So no need to say the English singer Paul Weller ..... that's assumed. Duffy isn't English so she is tagged as Welsh.

The French and German press would certainly identify Weller as English but there really is no need to do so in the English papers.

But I'm sure that bands like Coldplay are identified as being English in the American media. Just not in Britain.

Well, if Duffy keeps getting referred to as the 'Welsh singer' then hopefully Americans will begin to tell the difference between Wales and England.
