Having just viewed ITV HD for thr first time (Billy Connolly) I am impressed. Humax HDR seems a good investment! Picture quality is stunningly good! The sound was out of sync and adjustment made it worse. However switching the sound on the Humax to Dolby OFF and switching to SD and back to HD fixed that. ITV have come in for some stick on DS but if they can give us more of this good stuff the critics will have a tough job IMHO. Best of all it ain't on $ky

It wasn't too bad GC, but I noticed something not quite right on the interlacing on this programme. (Not enough to spoil anything) Still enjoyed it though. Looking forward to the next one.

I think i just got my new Humax HDR just in time. This is the first full HD program i have watched on ITV and i loved it, both the program and the quality. I didn't have any problems with the sound.

Its just a shame ITV just produce more shows in HD. I think if they got more shows shown in HD and eventually got ITV HD on Sky i think it could do really well.

Well I had the Humax set to 1080i and changed the Toshiba display to Exact Scan. Could not see a problem with the way those dancers did up their shoe laces
Unfortunately the secret is out and I'm looking forward to the next episode of "Snoods on TV" too!

Is Rab.C. Snoods nearer the mark? My guess was not at it is in SD only. Unless, of course, you upscale the DVDs ???

ITV have come in for some stick on DS
Its not just ITV.......everything seems to come in for stick on these forums Whilst I have learned a lot from DS there are times when I do find the overall general negativity hard going

In my view the bottom line is that Freesat, high definition TV and the Humax HDR are all excellent

Sound was out of sync for the FA Cup matches Saturday afternoon as well.

It looks like it could be a broacast problem as all my other HD including BBC seems fine.

One for Humax and ITV to liase on I think.

ITV HD footy matches have always had sound problems, either lip sync or drop outs and break-ups.

Sound is a big issues for HD, and especially with sports or live events.

The BBC could not even get the sound right when they showed the Milan derby on BBC3 the other week. Commentary was before the picture - so annoying to hear the action before seeing it - especially with football!

What makes you say that Snoods? I had a weird looping problem (on DVBViewer + Cyberlink) where it got stuck and kept playing the same 1 second of video again and again (while the sound carried on), never had that problem before.

As I'm In Scotland, I had to watch ITV London but I didn't even need to press red button, it just went directly to HD

Really enjoyed it but the lip synch was out. I couldn't be bothered going into menu and messing about with settings, so I just didn't look at Billys face and forgot about it. Good show, looking forward to seeing the rest of that beautiful scenery.

Watched the Money Programme last night on BBC 2 about tv financing. They were in the "Millionaire" studio to interview Chris Tarrant. Showed some footage of setting up "Millionaire" and the cameras being set up were HD ones, definate!

The problem i saw looking closely at the footage was that straight lines had slight jaggies on them jzee, it was very slight but noticible to me. Not bad enough to spoil it, but it did affect the overall sharpness of the shown video.

It wasn't anything to do with DVB Viewer as the other 2 HD channels were fine, just the Billy Connolly programme.

I'm being way over critical i know, but i did notice it. I will be examining the next episode with interest too.

You're definitely not being over critical. I noticed this too on my Technomate receiver. I was wondering if it was 720p material and they did something wrong when upsampling it to 1080i.

Not sure exactly where the problem was, but something definately wasn't right jgrgilbert.

Glad you posted, so i know someone else spotted it too, i feel less insane now.

Can't post any grabs as i never recorded it, but i will with the next episode.

I tried switching my video processor to "game mode", where it scales each interlaced field to full frame but still uses its edge smoothing algorithm while scaling. This improved it a bit, but it still didn't look as good as it should have, suggesting that the pixelation somehow spans across the 1080i fields.

Having read the comments from germanycalling about the quality of the Billy Connolly docomentary. I thought the quality of the HD was better than that on the BBC. Is it me, or is ITV quality better?

We have just watched the recording of the Billy Connolly programme. My wife & I both said we weren't "wowed" with the quality, not like some of the outdoor shots in the Piers Morgan Dubai, and Monte Carlo, programmes, which were absolutely stunning; and the sunny african bush scenes in Wild at Heart seem very good.

I don't know if the BC prog was really worse than the PM ones, or whether we are just getting used to HD now, and losing the wow factor?

I like the BBC progs I have seen, and would put the studio based content right up there, and the Nature's Great Events outdoor scenes were excellent.

I'll have to watch next week's BC more closely

Rgds.

Depends on the source video, but there was something not quite right with the Billy Connolly video quality.

Generally though, ITV HD quality is every bit as good as BBC HD in my opinion.

Have a wee lookie in the ITV HD folder and see if you agree.

I have to say I can't agree entirely.

Although I have seen some good HD on ITV eg. "True Lies", there are also times when the low bit rate really shows through. eg football. Football on ITV often isn't as good as you might expect from HD and the moment you get any type of camera movement (even very slow) the pitch and grass detail all blurs. Clearly they need to boost the bit rate for sports.

The other problem with ITV remains the Red button and its effects on recording, split programmes and News Breaks.

Again, maybe ITV need to look towards Luxe TV and their encoding equipment to see how they can produce sublime HD with low bit rates. Not only would this probably save them money in the long run, but some of the money saved from normal HD programming could be poured back into upping the bit rate for sports or fast action.

A higher bit rate won't necessarily help blur during pans. If you're shooting a football match in dim UK winter light the blur will start in the camera. Luxe TV is practically shooting still life by comparison.
