Hi,
I am new to freesat and I was wondering if there is anything to gain from doing a manual tune on a tv that has freeview built in.

I'm not sure which manual tune your referring to be it the freeview tuning or the freesat tuning but I'd say yes as there are some channels available on freeview that are not on freesat and vice versa. I would tell you what they are but my freeview coverage is dire so there is a lot missing. I do know that you can get sky news, sky sports news and some of the UKTV channels on freeview and not freesat. With freesat you get BBC HD, ITV HD, Zone Romantica, Zone Reality, Zone Thriller, Zone Horror, BET, Al Jazeera, Euro News, France 24, Russia Today, Bloomberg TV, True Movies, Movies4Men, Simply Movies, Wedding TV, Information TV and more. Then of course there is the ability to do a scan in non-freesat mode which will give you even more channels to watch. Get the most out of your equipement and tune to everything available and enjoy Ohhh and welcome to the forum.

Thank you for your replies,I think that freesat is great,it's just a little bit too high tech for me so I will stick to the basics

yes I know but it wasn't obvious to me on first reading if it was manual tune for the in built freesat or freeview he was trying to add to

Right,I gave it a go,went to SETUP/MANUAL TUNE/OK/SEARCH/OK once results displayed pressed SAVE.
300 or so tv and radio programs,channel 4 was now 5001 plus there was about 4 of them,same goes for for the other channels,some of them duplicated several times,all renumbered.
When I inputed the normal number for BBC1 south east,there was no program.
I must have done something wrong,I feel I was lucky to escape with my life after my trip into the unknown, I quickly did a freesat tune to get things back to normal.
I know most of you will laugh at my ineptitude but I was bought up in the age of valve TVs.
Anyone want to buy a crystal set?

Yep that sounds about right don't worry the scan that you did that put channel 4 on 5001 was the non freesat scan it doesn't effect the freesat scan ie it doesn't over-write it.
you should be able to switch from freesat to non freesat with out scanning again

I would echo this Pegleg. Have only had mine a few days and it is different for sure! However I draw a parallel to first coming to Germany and driving on the wrong side of the road. It took a couple of weeks to become comfortable with it, but after that it seemed pefectly OK. As Gaseous says there are plenty of good folk here who will help if required!

Pegleg, what you have done is tuned in all the FTA channels available at 28E. The reason for the duplications is that many channels have a number of regional variants (even if they are only for advertising purposes). The channel order is the order in which the HDR found them. As stated above, this channel list is completely independent of the freesat channels and you can switch between them.

If you want to reduce the number of channels available in non-freesat mode, one way of doing this would be to look up what channels are available and then only tune in the transponders that they are on (delete the unwanted channels you also get at each stage). Don't bother with the channels that are available in freesat mode as you can always switch back to freesat mode for them. You will need to delete all the non-freesat channels you have just tuned in first.

The charts are organised by transponder (which carries a number of channels). The only information you need to tune them is the transponder frequency and polarisation. This is towards the left of the light blue row at the top of each group (e.g. 10714.00 H for the transponder which carries Channel 4).

Remember that, every time you do a manual tune or (I think) move or delete non-freesat channels, you will lose you freesat recording schedule.

I'm not sure this applies to pegleg I was under the impression he is using a freesat tv not a set top box.

Oops . Nevertheless, I'd probably be right in thinking that he wouldn't have any programmes scheduled to record after doing the manual tune .

Being more serious, I hadn't remembered that it was a freesat TV we were talkning about but, even if I had done, I might still have included the warning (just not addressed it to pegleg) as this is the freesat+ forum. I suspect that a lot of lurkers take advice from this forum. I know I did from whatever the forum was before I joined.

What I have is a Samsung LCD tv with the freeview built in and a Humax HDR, not a tv with the freesat built in.
However,I have already learned alot from you guy's and I am very grateful to you all for your time and trouble.

Thats ok most of us start out a little unsure and vague as to what we are trying to convey on the forum. In fact some including myself still do or jump to conclusions about what equipment other users are operating but it's well worth sticking with the forum to enhance our knowledge and pick up little tips posted by other members. Before you know it someone will post a query and you will know the answer and respond and then chances are we wont be able to shut you up
