... and those who don't!

Do you ever feel that some actors have far better chemistry with their on-screen partners than others? I feel that Bill Roach (Ken) and Anne Kirkbride (Deirdre) seem to have a genuine warmth when they are on screen; you only have to look at the wonderful way in which Anne comforted Bill at his wife's recent memorial service, and indeed, departing cast members have reported them to be the best of friends in the green room. In contrast, I sense a certain coolness between Sally Whittaker and Michael Le Vell; they never seem to mention their working relationship in interviews, and in last year's Comic Relief video of Peter Kay's single they were obviously stood miles apart from each other, when (I presume) they had been asked to partipitate as a famous telly "couple".

Also, I remember watching an edition of "This Morning" years ago where Dean Sullivan and Sue Jenkins were being interviewed, and they alluded to a pair of actors who were notorious in soap circles for having a highly successful screen partnership, but who absolutely loathed each other behind the scenes. It would have been around 1999. I wonder who it could be ... might be fun to speculate!

So, does genuine friendship help make or break a soap couple? Or is acting enough?

Apparently ben lawson and natalie salebe(SP??) (Rosie & Frazer in neighbours) didn't get along. I suppose it can make the chemistry stronger.

Well Tina O'Brien went out with two of her soap boyfriends [Todd and Jason who she still with] and they were good on screen but it probably just depends on acting ability and how well actors bounce off each other

That interesting about Sally and Kevin - wonder if they do get on in real life?

Always thought Jack and Ronnie in EE had gr8 chemistry and in real life Sam Janus is best friends with his wife - they both said very uncomfortable about there kissing, love scenes as they like brother and sister but you could never have guessed this from their on screen performance!

Sometimes not getting on can actually make chemistry! You get a sort of 'I hate you but I'd love to fxxx you' vibe from them .

I've seen actors who are known to be close friends with their onscreen partner have great chemistry with them - yet at the same time, another pair that are also very close only had a 'friendship chemistry' on-screen, the passion etc didn't come across.

Chemistry is this weird, magical, intangible thing. I don't think it's just down to great acting, because I'm sure I've seen great actors in plenty of on-screen relationships where they just had no spark whatsoever.

It is nice when couples are good friends off-screen though. I'd hate to think of some people spending all that time together if they hate each other! I'm pretty sure Alan Fletcher and Jackie Woodburne are good friends.

Dieter Brummer and Melissa George played Shane and Angel in Home & Away. They hated each other in real life.

Sally & Kevin do get on in real life, I remember dreading last year about them holidaying in EuroDisney together, they didn't realise they were on the same flights but were and their kids spent a lot of time together.

In Home & Away Nicvk Parrish and his girlfriend Lucinda Croft didn't get on in real life, I think it ended up with Nick being axed from the show.

Didn't the pair who played Lynn and Joe Scully in Neighbours really not get along in real life. I'm sure I heard that.

Yes there was a court case that he always came to work drunk which is why he was fired. He denied it. The actor that played Karl was actually on Joe's side and the actress that plays Susan was supporting Lynn but they still got on!

Could be referring to Norman Bowler and Claire King (Frank and Kim Tate) from Emmerdale who did NOT get on at all.

At the opposite extreme - in the early days of EastEnders the actors who played Debs and Andy (Ross Davison and Shirley Cheriton) briefly became a real life couple.

Michael and Pippa Ross got on so well in Home and Away that they got married in real life.

JR and Sue Ellen Ewing from Dallas are very close friends in real life. Linda Gray lives close by to Larry Hagman and would often visit Larry and his wife.

In home and away noah and haley were together for ages til she dropped him for the tennis guy. Jake and Becca in hollyoaks were together for a while too. And Mandy and Ben but they were just a hookup on the show not serious.

Have they ever been a couple onscreen? I know Debbie's love life has been colourful but I don't remember David.
