Strange fault
Hi, hope someone here can help.
Recently my phone stopped working properly (not ringing continuously when someone calls) and my broadband kept dropping out. It deteriorated until the line was totally dead (no dial tone). Suspecting it was due to the old extension socket, i fitted a new one and sure enough, everything then worked perfectly - for a day or so. It then re-occured, which i couldn't understand, so i fitted a new master NTE5 socket (i know you're not meant to but let's just put that to one side for the moment). Again everything then worked perfectly so i know it was all wired up correctly. But 24 hours later, the problem came back again and the line eventually went dead! If i plug the phone into the incoming test line, it works fine, but if it's plugged into the faceplate socket (or extension) the line is dead. so why did it work for a day or so? It's as if the new sockets are getting 'fried' somehow. What on earth could be causing this? Even if BT fitted a new master socket themselves, what's to stop it happening again?

I'd say the 'works for a day or so' part is coincidence and the problem is damp somewhere in the (probably external) wiring.

sounds like you have a partial loop fault on your internal wiring(going off it works ok in the test socket but not when its in the faceplate or ext'n). if you pm me the phone number i'll give it a remote test to see if it's showing the loop.

I think the external wiring is ok as the BT test socket works fine. The strange thing is, when the NTE5 faceplate is plugged into the test socket, any phone plugged into the faceplate's socket won't work. This is even though i have removed the extension completely - so there is NO internal wiring left - just the incoming BT line connected to the A and B terminals and that's it.

it looks like the faceplate has gone faulty then, is the socket near a location where it could be damp?(under a window, damp walls), you can either calls us out(but must warn you that they may charge you for the visit, our back office have been raising charges on all internal clearcodes even if the engineer doesn't raise them) or order a NTE5 from ebay and fit the facelplate yourself.

thanks for your reply 'openreachpeep'. Yes that's what i did (order a NTE5 from ebay) when the original master socket stopped working. When i fitted the new one, everything worked fine for 24 hours or so, then the new socket stopped working, just as the old one had. I'm just baffled by that!
