HELP How do I get footage of the tv using a DV camera
I really need help as I want to get footage of someone playing a video game but is there a way to film it without it getting black lines. As I'm doing a documentary for my media course.
I will be using finalcut express to edit. Please help! Thanks |

Don't use a CRT TV - if you use Plasma or LCD you don't get any such lines, as they don't scan like a CRT does.

Play a game with the camera in front of the tv? As I want to film bits of the game I have played. Is there a wire you use or something |

you need to slow the shutter speed down on the camera to 25 frames a second (I think), the same as the TV. thenn the lines will disappear.

Only if your DV camera will accept a line input, most don't.
Don't know of any prices but my camcorder is 5-years-old. |

Usually the ability is present but disabled - the socket is hidden and you'll need to tweak an internal setting. Google "dv-in enabler". |

either visual hub to convert, or find one of the youtube downloading sites, and convert to .MOV

I use my DV camcorder to record footage to my computer all the time. However, I don't film the TV to do it though as this is a horrible way of doing it and you end up with naff results. I usually record stuff from my freeview box.
I bought a Scart adapter with a signal in/out switch like this one: http://medda86.com/tv/scart-adapter.jpg That goes into the back of my freeview box. Then, I connect an S-Video cable from the freeview box into my canon DV camera, and I connect the red/white audio plugs up using the AV cable that came with my camcorder. That one looks something like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg You can use the yellow composite cable instead of using the S-Video cable, but I don't use it, because S-Video gives you a far better picture. In the menu settings on the camcorder, there is a setting called AV>DV (I think that's what it's called). This pushes the AV content coming into the camcorder on to the camcorder screen. Sorted. You can then either record the footage onto a DV tape, OR you can connect a DV firewire cable up to your mac and then fire up a neat little application called Vidi, which you can download here: http://www.mitzpettel.com/software/vidi.php Bingo. The footage from my freeview box is on my Mac. I can run it full screen, or I can record it from Vidi, which records your footage in the .dv format. It even does timer recordings, so I can create a record schedule to record stuff when I'm out. Neat!! But this isn't what you want. You want to be able to record your video games console. As you don't have the relevant plugs on the back of your video games console, you have to buy a coupler from an electronics store, which looks like this: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg Plug your composite and audio cables into the coupler, and you can create a connection between your games console and your camcorder. You're good to go. What you have to remember when doing this though, is Vidi lags when watching footage through it, by a couple of milliseconds, so if you're going to play a game and record it, it's best to play it using the screen on your camcorder. If you want an even better picture, buy an S-Video cable for your console and use an S-Video coupler like the one here: http://www.tvcables.co.uk/images/ite...eo-coupler.jpg Hope this helps. |
