Apparently music stores have grossly underestimated what Will Young was capable of selling and have been selling out. Rumours this is heading the chart, but no reliable sources yet.

According to today's Liquid News, Will sold 40,000 copies in the first day despite so many stores selling out and having to re-order. Shane Ritchie is right behind him at 36,000, followed by Michael Jackson. Alex Parks has slipped to number 6.
That seems like a good start for Will. I can't remember, but didn't Westlife's single last week only sell around 42,000? |

Looking at those figures, I hope Shane Ritchie doesn't outsell Will Young because there's not enough Will Young stock in stores!
Pleeeeese don't let Shane Ritchie be number one! |

7 Iron Maiden (!?!)
You may, or may not, remember Iron Maiden going straight into number 1 just after Christmas 1990 with the beautiful ballad "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter".

The wednesday midweeks on will youngs official webpage show that shane has overtaken him and is now 10,000 ahead.
It's tru about distribution- they're selling out everywhere. |

Looks like there's no hope of Will grabbing number 1 the week after, either, because Gareth Gates is set to top the charts with his new single. Oh, well. There's always Will's album. |

In fact Kylie has sold just 75k of 'Slow' so far, with not much left in the tank for that single.....

IMO you'd have to go back decades! I heard this Shane Ritchie song ONCE and I'm trying hard not to ever hear it again.
I can understand why people may have bought Millenium Prayer or Will Young, but are they buying this for charity or because they watch Esatenders? |

I went out shopping today and went into three music stores. Not a single copy of Will's Leave Right Now was on the shelves. I'd love him to be number one (not a huuuge Will fan, I just love the song), but if the single isn't even in the shops to buy, Ritchie's going to win!

Will Young's single is nowhere to be found in Brighton today. Plenty of Shane Ritchie's lying around though

According to a news report HMV have have said that first week demand for Will Young's single has been the highest in the whole year. New stock is being brought in to stores everywhere and they reckon it will be number one! WOW! Could this be a Christmas number one!

Originally posted by SmartPrince I read that BMG sent its own employees out to hand-deliver stacks of CDs to shops in London. They certainly have made a mess of this.

Shows how little confidence they have in their own artist and their own ability to tell if something is going to be a big hit.

The least-selling No.1 single ever was Blur's "Beetlebum" only sold around 50,000 copies (28,000 in the first week), plus it only spent 3 weeks (2 weeks in Top 20) in the Top 40 charts in 1997.
