Can't find the song version I want on iTunes - does this happen often?

Hi

I'm looking for Gabrielle's "Rise". There seems to be only one version on the whole of iTunes (a rather thin sounding guitar version) and not the rich tune and the lovely voice sound that you hear on the radio and Youtube. I've tried all sorts of options on the Search function and yet there just seems to be this one type. I'm so disappointed!

There are so many different options on iTunes as to what song version you want (radio edit, album version etc) so I was very surprised not to see it. Type "Rise" into Youtube and you will hear the version I mean; it seems to be the dominant one with the nice humming start and all the instrumentals.

Am I simply looking in the wrong place?! There is no indication whatsoever that the version that I (rather stupidly) downloaded from iTunes without pre-listening might be a particular edited version or anything!

Try Amazon MP3 or Play.com. Be cheaper too!

Just checked neither Amazon or Play have the version you want.

Ok, thank you everyone. I'll try looking elsewhere. I still think it's really weird, that one song version not being available when almost every other version on the planet of every other song seemed to be there! Ah well.

I recommend looking FIRST always in other stores, iTunes locks you in to using certain music formats etc... Play.com and 7digital are great alternatives that are sometimes 20p cheaper too.

I am also disappointed that iTunes offers nothing in the way of Vengaboys or B*Witched

As has been pointed out try NOT to use iTunes. A fair chunk of it is locked with DRM and low rubbish bit rate of 128kbps. They do have one called iTunes plus, but it's more expensive 20p extra for the same track without DRM and a higher bit rate. So basically beware of iTunes. Just because it's the biggest doesn't make it the best. Far from it, I buy stuff off the net iTunes is normally my last port of call.

Try Amazon or Play.Com no DRM and decent bit rate and cheaper than iTunes.

They're making their catalogue DRM-free, so DRM isn't going to be the main issue. But iTunes music is still in the AAC format, which many mp3 players do not support. It's worth avoiding these proprietary formats like AAC and WMA and trying to get .mp3 as much as you can - this format will work on any music player you own and any you own in the future.

Still iTunes plus is more expensive than anywhere else. Plus a good music converter like dBpoweramp will convert it from m4a to mp3 easily.

iTunes will convert iTunes Plus songs to MP3 for you, as long as they are the DRM free versions.

Most iTunes downloads are DRM free @ 256kbps and cost 79p per track. Amazon, Play, 7Digital etc are all in the same ball-park for prices - Play seems to be the cheapest at 70p per track for a lot of songs. So it's definitely worth shopping around, but there are plenty of songs where iTunes is up to 20p cheaper than some other sites.

The best deals are available when you buy a whole album rather than individual songs, and in that case it's best to check the album price rather than the per song price. Sometimes iTunes is more expensive, sometimes other sites are more expensive - competition has made music downloads better quality and better value in the past few months.

As others have said. iTunes is mostly DRM-free now. Apparently they will be 100% DRM-free very soon. Most of the songs on iTunes are 79p and most albums are never usually any more than £7.99. Not to mention that iTunes still offers the largest selection and the interface and search are still much better than Amazon MP3. Try doing a search for Gabrielle on Amazon, it is a mess.

Competition is good and it has made iTunes go DRM-free, but for me iTunes is still head and shoulders above the competition at the moment.

It's very strange. The version you are looking for is - I think - the single version with the Bob Dylan sample (the voices singing "mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm"!). The version on iTunes is the original album version.

You can buy the Rise album on CD which has both versions on it but you can't download it from any legal site. I think the version on her greatest hits album is also the right one.

But why isn't it available to download?

I am guessing that if it is a different version then it someone else probably owns the publishing rights who don't like digital downloads, which is probably why it says partial album on her greatest hits. Some of these recording rights are so complicated and all these different bands and labels all have different views. It must be a nightmare for Apple, Amazon, Play etc to try and work out deals to get as much content as possible without it being too expensive and DRMing the crap out of it.

Thinking laterally here, the song Rise was released before the iTunes Store existed so my guess would be that when the rights to release the single version of the song were being negotiated the digital download rights were not included; and so although the label can distribute other tracks from the album via downloads, they may not be allowed to do so with Rise.
