the end of plasma?
the end of plasma?
http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/11...us-on-lcd-tvs/ http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/16...asma-business/ http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/02/26...plasma-market/ http://www.nytimes.com/external/giga...las-18932.html "Now, the only plasma manufacturers left standing are Panasonic, LG, and Samsung, all of which make their own components." but if LG do pull out, that leaves 2. the article does say Panasonic will probably stick with it. what about Samsung? they are the worlds largest lcd manufacturer, & being the 2nd largest mobile phone manufacturer, they are probably doing a lot of r&d into oled's. with the amount of r&d going on into lcd screens, it cant be long before the standard ones are as good as plasma, even at large sizes. |

Well they could fall off the wall mount and hit you on the head
![]() I think we are simply seeing the market embrace cheaper solutions and LCD has always had that edge over plasma and certainly LCD has improved far more than Plasma over the last few years. Of course we are now hitting the point where LCD itself has nowhere to go both in technology and price which isn't good for anyone which is why we really need OLED to become the mainstream high end alternative and in time not only offer the benefits of LCD production (cheaper and easier than Plasma) but the already higher quality images it can create and of course having the green credentials that Plasma rightly or wrongly does not. |

still offers the best PQ
best PQ value for money LCD is flawed and always will be- it cant go much further- LED backlights are rare and dont work- to turn off a part of the picture is wrong. OLED needs to come along quick. It will be a shame to see Plasma go but a real alternative for true enthusiasts has to be available first. Laser TV may creep up and bite OLED on the ass for Big screen 37"+ |

Demand is likely to remain high and supply dwindling to nothing so who knows, they may sell at a premium

"Myth #2: The gas in a plasma TV is poisonousFact: The gas used in plasma TVs is a mix of two non-flammable "inert" gases: neon and xenon. These gases are not harmful, either individually or when combined. Besides, the amount of gas used in a plasma TV has been described as "barely a thimble-full." So if the gas were to somehow leak out (which it won't, see Myth #3 below), it can't harm you. " http://www.hephnertv.com/plasma_myths.html |

![]() A plasma panel contains very little 'gas' anyway, at about half atmospheric pressure - and as already stated, is a mixture of completely harmless noble gases. |

A 40" OLED panel thats about 5mm thick or something. I could live wit that. And their colour reproduction is meant to be awesome. Cowon have put a 3.3" OLED in their newest PMP. Granted, it's still a small screen, but it's meant to be amazing .... even at that size. Have a look at the example pics here: http://www.dapreview.net/p/content/c...?content.348.4 The A2 may have to get upgraded soon after all! |

The greatest danger with a dropped plasma is not the poisonous gas but the sickly red plasma jelly that starts oozing onto the carpet. Disgusting!

There is nothing particularly flawed about LCD technology. Its not perfect but can give as good a picure as any other current techlogy and given most TV output is SD and even most of the HD is at the bottom of the HD standard it's not going to matter for quite a time.
Plasma is largly going because LCS upt to about 542" is cheaper. Plasma is mainly around for 46" plus at present Not entirely true as it can't give as good a picture as the top of the range plasmas. Sad to see Pioneer leave the plasma market but not entirely a surprise, hopefully Panasonic can up their game to fill the gap going forward |

Looks like the LG rumours have been put to bed for now:
LG NOT withdrawing from plasma TVs And Panasonic are still fully committed to plasma judging by the raft of new models for 2009: Panasonic 2009 plasmas available in stores and for pre-order; pricing leaked
