Flip Video Mino - Now This Is What I Call Impressive !!!

Hi All,

I got my Flip Video Mino in the post yesterday & I gotta say that I am f**king impressed .

I was thinking about getting the Ultra model & then saw this 1 for an extra £30 as it has a better encoding engine, crisper sounding mic & built in rechargeable battery as well as rewind & forward controls.

I recorded a 4 minute song on my keyboard at 640x480 @ 30 fps the avi file ended up being around 75mb.

I cannot wait to take this to Australia with me in a couple weeks.

10/10

The standard mino is SD (640x480). It's this one: http://www.theflip.com/store/Mino.aspx (This is what darkjedimaster has bought)

The mino HD is HD (funnily enough ... lol): http://www.theflip.com/store/Minohd.aspx

The HD on is a bit more expensive though. Not many stockists in the UK .... well over £200 on Amazon. Dunno if I'd pay that much for it.

Kodak Zi6 is probably a better bet if you want an uber-simple HD camcorder: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kodak-Zi6-De...5873220&sr=8-4

I e-mailed them about the official UK availability of the Flip MinoHD last month.

I asked . . .
Are there any plans for the Flip MinoHD camcorder to be
made available here in the UK anytime soon?

The reply . . .
Thank you for your interest in Flip Video.

We do plan on releasing the MinoHD in the UK. We do not
currently have a release date set.

We wish we could provide you with a more informative
answer. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you,
Flip Video Support

I intend to get a Flip Mino, but I'm waiting for the HD version to become officially available in
the UK ... IMHO, any camcorder that still only records in the 4:3 aspect ratio, is obsolete.

Have always been a great fan of the flip - my son loves it. Will be interesting to see how the HD works out.

Doesn't look too pocket (or wallet!) friendly though ....

The Flip MinoHD is now officially available to buy in the UK, priced at £169.99
Currently, Play.com and Amazon.co.uk have it ... not sure about any others.

I've now decided that I don't really want a Flip MinoHD anymore. I want one of these instead!

While the Flip MinoHD does 720p HD video, and has 4GB of built in memory for £170, it has no
slot for an SD card to extend the recording capacity. So that 4GB (up to 1 hour) is all you get.

Meanwhile, the Toshiba Camileo S10 camcorder is a lower cost unit, does full 1080 HD video,
and supports SD cards upto 32GB, allowing up to 8 hours of full HD recording on one card.
It also has a bigger built in display, and (AFAIK) can also be used as a webcam.

So, the choice is . . .

A better spec full HD camcorder, from a tech giant that's a household name, or a lower spec
(not full) HD camcorder for a higher price, made by a firm that is comparatively unknown.

There's really no competition is there?

That Toshiba does look good, but *doesn't* do full HD video. It records at 1440x1080 - full HD would be 1920x1080.

In fact, looking through similar products, thats the resolution that they all seem to record at. Strange.

All these £150 HD camcorders are total bottom of the range stuff.

You're not going to get much for that sort of money .... certainly nothing thats going to get you something like bluray quality recordings in anything less than absolutely ideal conditions.

Zero zoom. Quality will drop right off in anything less than perfect lighting. Dodgy framerates and dropout reported in most of them ... especially if panning. Some questionalable colour balance and saturation ... etc etc .....

Fine if you want a "funcam" capable of recording at high resolutions but don't expect miracles at these sort of prices.

It's like these people who buy a phone with an 8mp camera on it and then wonder why it doesn't produce dSLR quality images!

Resolution is just a number .... not a guarantee of quality.

In answer to your comments,i have the £100 ultra version of the flip,so it's below the mino.

Some of your comments are correct, the zoom is rubbish,it's digital, not optical.

For portability it's a superb design, much better than a camcorder in that sense,i now shoot fast moving smooth footage after attaching the flip to my bike,it copes with most small bumps,it won't cope with going down a pot hole though.
I bought the correct £15 flip action bracket and customised it,and attached it rigidly to my handlebar.

Picture quality is respectable at all times,cloudy/sunny/in the rain, even in the dark,i've tried filming at midnight with little light around,no real problems. If there is no light at all obviously it's poor, but a few street lights should be enough for a picture.

I made a dvd from my footage, it's not going to be equal to a large £150 camcorder, that i knew before i even bought the thing.
colours and clarity all seem fine throughout the footage, definition could have been a bit better.

I think these cameras are fine for people who want to use a camcorder quickly,a child can easily use the flip it is so simple.
I am going to be using mine a lot,i take it everywher e at the moment.
The flip appears to be the best rated in terms of pocket camcorders, plenty of enthusiasm about this product.

Don't get me wrong .... I'm not saying they're garbage or anything. As long as you know what you're getting BEFORE you buy it (which you did by the sound of it) then you'll probably be happy with it. I considered getting one myself for a holiday later this year. In the end I decided just to buy shedloads of memory for my superzoom camera instead. It has decent video capability, surprisingly good sound quality for a (primarily stills rather than video) camera and 10x optical zoom .... and, most importantly, I'm more interested in stills than video.

Just don't expect anything more than the basics at this price point. Like I say, a "funcam" (for want of a better name!).

When you slap the "HD" tag on anything, people suddenly expect miracles from it ..... which, isn't going to happen for £150! lol.

I went with a Sony HDR-HC3 HD camera in 2007 hasn't done me wrong yet.....some people may hate MiniDV but I have played these tapes back a fair few times no real problems so far, I also can plug the camera into my PC via firewire and easily capture the footage direct to PC in MPEG-2 ready for editing.

I am cautious of these hard drive camera as you can easily run out of space and be all "ok so I'm running low on space what can I delete?" with tapes I don't have that issue

By the looks of what's on that site, they're not exactly pocket size budget HD camcorders.

Hi, I am looking to buy a small HD camcorder on a budget of about 200pds. Have read reviews of the flips, the kodaks, camileo's but still not sure which is for me.
I like the idea of extendable storage and HDMI cable but dont mind a slightly larger cam if it means better quality video. Out of the Kodak zx1, CAMILEO S10 and CAMILEO H20 which has the best video quality? I am guessing it's between the CAMILEO's? To be used for general family use, holidays and filming from the sky on a paraglider !!

I've decided against all of these weird shaped video recorders.

Picked up a Kodak Z1275 a while back - that offers 12mp stills, 5x optical zoom, 1280x720/30fps video, and it cost me under £100 (offer at Argos).

None of these offer a better combination of video and still photography than the Kodak, although some are more pocketable.
