Michael Andrews - Mad World
It's not often that a cover is better than the original, but I have to say this song is amazing. Just so full of emotion.

I heard it on totp2 yesterday. Its a good one, but Alex Parks version is, imo, much better and just stunningly good.

oh - who's Michael Andrews? my g/f just mentioned this yesterday and she thought it was the version from *donnie darko* by gary jules - which is absolutely brilliant. when I first heard it, it bugged the hell out of me - i recognised the song, but thought it sounded like Michael Stipe singing it, but i hadn't a clue what REM song it was. d'oh!

I think it's actually Michael Andrews' record with Gary Joules singing, or maybe vice versa. That's what the Radio 1 DJ said the other day when playing it anyway. It is a damn good version I have to say.
It does sound Michael Stipeish, I agree. |

I watched it on TOPT2 and was left wondering if you sang like that on PI whether enough people would vote for you as it has no big belting notes or anything to score points on, except that is beautiful. not a competition winner. irrelevant I know, but that's what went through my PI obsessed mind! |

I remember the Tears for Fears original, and while I was never a big fan, this girl I was in love with (unrequited) was, so the original has a special place in my heart
The first time I heard the new version, I thought that there were not enough variations on the few notes that are actually sung to keep it interesting in such a sparse version, but on subsequent listens I realised that the backing builds up in quite a subtle way and I now think that this could be my favourite song of the year. I haven't watched 'Donnie Darko' yet, despite a friend nagging me to do so for months, but it's on box office at the moment so hope to do so soon and hope that it is as good as everyone says it is! |

I like it. Heard it yesterday on TOTP2 and couldn't for the life of me remember what film it was from, then Power FM played it this morning and said it was Donnie Darko. I kicked myself! He also said it sounded like Michael Stipe, but I think the singer sounds more like the bloke from Gomez.
I haven't heard Alex Parks's version yet, but I'm holding out high hopes as I'm a big fan of hers. I liked the original, but Michael Andrews's version has more emotion, a better interpretation of the lyrics. |

I haven't heard the Michael Andrews version, but would agree that the Alex Parks version from her album is excellent.

Steve Wright is nuts about this song and plays it daily. Apparently he's had hundreds of requests for it, he's saying it COULD be the Xmas no.1.
It really is a beautifully haunting song, I'm totally hooked on it. Love Tears For Fears but I do prefer this version. And I too thought it was Micahel Stipe at first. |
