Hi,

Do you eat seaweed? I really wanted to try it as my diet
is quite narrow at the moment but I've been told it usually contains
small animals which has obviously put me off

Most seaweed that you see these days, especially from supermarkets is only shredded cabbage.

I have never heard of or seen small animals in any of the seaweed I have eaten. That's like worrying about there being worms or bugs in your lettuce. You do know the seaweed, be it real or cabbage is washed before it gets to you?

I've heard people say that the process of making nori isn't necessarily vegan because of all the little seahorses. Also I've read that they grow seaweed on mollusk shells, etc.

There are kosher seaweed available, which would be vegan. Emerald Cove is a popular brand that makes one. You would have to contact the manufacturer to see if any animal products are used in the production.

Hope that helps.

Do you mean it contains seahorses? If so, not only would it not be vegan but it wouldn't be vegetarian either.

I'm talking about real seaweed.

Just found this but not sure what to think now. I will give seaweed a miss

Kosher food isn't the same as vegetarian though , is it?
I guess it is impossible to have a 100% animal free diet as food is so easily contaminated

Kosher food certainly isn't the same as vegetarian. However, I did work for a Jewish company for a couple of years and we used to have Kosher milk delivered. Milk is vegetarian, although what made it Kosher I don't know.

Kosher food when it comes to vegetarian food would be fine because of the preparation - it has to be cut/washed etc.. at a sink of its own so contamination isn't possible - meat is kept completely aside and anyway, as mentioned above 'seaweed' is basically cabbage and didn't come from the sea in the first place!

edited to add - that Frederic Patenaude bloke sort of sounds like a charlatan - there's not a whole heap of science behind his musings at the very least (and yeah, I've been browsing his bizarre site since last posting!).

I'm assuming you mean Carte D'or?

http://www.cartedor.co.uk/

If you click onto any of the flavours shown on their website - on the right hand side - scroll down to the ingredients shown as the bottom. I can't see anything that would mean they're not suitable for vegetarians.

Marine life will always be on it either noticable or micro. If you are into preserving marine life, then I would not buy it or even cook with it.

Why is your diet quite narrow? As a vegan my diet is more varied than any carnivore or vegetarian I know.

That was it! Tasted yuk and cheap anyway. It said on their site that they can't guarantee where the whey is sourced from. If I want a dessert in the future , i'll buy Swedish glace (if it still exists!)

I was living off yoghurt and stir fry's when I wrote that but i'm about to go back to eating as few carbs as possible due to health issues. I always get stuck when it comes to meals , I want to stop eating bread , cereals , rice , pasta etc but I hate tofu , condiments , bulgar wheat etc so i'm thinking of just cutting down on carbs as I can't eat meat/fish. I'm too picky

I don't like plain tofu either, but it makes a lovely cheesecake whizzed up with lemon juice, a little oil, and some sugar.
Have you tried the marinated or smoked tofu? They're actually rather nice.

Try basing some meals on tinned chick peas and other pulses for a bit of variety, or look out for Redwood Foods or stuff in the chiller section at wholefood shops or some supermarkets, they're all vegan.

Seaweed tastes foul; if you need the iodine from it then some salt contains it.

I ate seaweed a few times a week - although i am not vego, my the OH is. There are no visible traces of fish (or funnily enough seahorses?) but I guess there could be microscopic pieces of algae or plankton or whatever on the seaweed?

But I suppose that could apply to anything... are the bacteria in yoghurt termed "life" and therefore not suitable for veggies?
