'A dazzling display by Alan Shearer has brightened up Tyneside. Thousands turned up to see the Newcastle United star flick the switch which turned on the city's Christmas lights.......

Geordie actor Tim Healy also joined in the celebrations along with Jonny Regan, star of Big Brother. The duo are currently rehearsing for Theatre Royal pantomime Peter Pan.

Shearer arrived on stage with his 11-year-old daughter Chloe to screaming fans and said: "This is fantastic, for many, many years I have remembered that this is the best place to be.

"I am in very good company in switching on the lights after Ant and Dec last year, Denise Welch, and Bobby Robson the year before that. I am very much looking forward to it." .......

Jonny added: "It's just lovely to be back home in Newcastle because I have been travelling around all year. It's great working with Tim as well because I have grown up watching him.

"It's a great night and whenever something like this happens in Newcastle you know people will always have a good time." .......

Yes Jonny,...when they witness such a momentous occasion, like somebody turning on a lightswitch,..it's party time for the whole town.

Surely Newcastle has enough celebs to call upon, than need to resort to getting an Ex BB contestant from two series ago.
