Tony did look upset. Maybe Radio 2 couldn’t continue to outsource the studio each Sunday?
Tony was very vocal that it was his decision to give up the show so I doubt studio availability had nothing to do with it.
He’s by no means the only one saying goodbye to BBC local radio. It may well have been his decision but he can surely see the writing on the wall.It would certainly have nothing to do with studio space. From next week an already existing show from Kent goes out on the frequencies so the programme isn’t being replaced and they will save more money.A shame that yet another four hours with the uninspiring BBC LR playlist will go out on the stations involved instead of Tony’s choices.
Tony made many hints that he will be letting us know what will happen next Soon,,,,
Could there be a return to POTP ?
Certainly not an impossibility but perhaps a bit odd doing 2 shows live on a Saturday, especially given Tony's age? However I'd be happy to see him back. Perhaps also he wouldn't be so keen on doing charts from this century & the trend is for more modern charts.

Sounds of 60s moving to Sunday
So Helen Thomas has confided in you then? It will be interesting to see if the weekend line-up changes much? New host for POTP, Romesh taking over from Claudia & will Sunday Love Songs continue in it's current format?
Can't imagine he will be missed, last time I heard him was before he was binned off City 2 network. Was awful and dated even back then.
Never mind the fact that over 1 million people listen to Tony on BBC Radio 2's Sounds of the Sixties and as I understand its the most listened to show on BBC Sounds! Plus he presents the Golden Hour on Radio 2 every Sunday night and popular soul shows on bank holidays. Also I think you will find Tony chose to leave the City 2 network himself because he did not want to just follow the play list!
anyone else remember listening to his 09.00-12.00 daily soul show on Radio London was awesome, ahead of its time
Yes it was a great show and I listened whenever I could. Also Tony did the Soul Night Out every month.
Tony’s Soul Show is one of my all time favourite shows and introduced me to soul music which was very strong in the 80s. As Tony himself said on Tracks of my Years there is no way he could do the show now with the naughty phone calls but it was compulsive listening for me whenever I could fit it in around work commitments. Shame there was no catch up in those days.
I also attended a few Soul Nights Out which were brilliant and Tony and the late Steve Walsh created an electric atmosphere. They took place on a Thursday night and I was always knackered at work the next day but it was always worth it!

There were lots of changes in the commercial radio sector. Unfortunately it’s happened at BBC local. Im sure they could have catered for his show still - if he hadn’t decided to leave.

It’s become clear to me whatever the position with Tony is that the aim on BBC local radio is to spend more and more hours sticking to their playlist which is inflicted on all stations, they don’t want people choosing different music except if it fits in to the ‘introducing’ or ethnic slots.True there are a very few exceptions left but I wouldn't be surprised if they are scrapped as well as contracts come to an end and we get even closer to an eventual more or less Radio England for much of the day.

The only show is the Golden Hour which he’s able to pick his own music, that even has to at least cater for one new song.
Unfortunately the management of BBC local radio is ageist and that has been shown so obviously when you look at the ages of most of the presenters they have sacked and got rid of over the last year and in many cases appallingly.
Sad fact is it is also happening in other jobs in industry, customer care and retail especially with big and multi national companies, not just in BBC and commercial radio.

Unless you didn't like soul music - hardly serving all of London was it?
I believe he skewed it towards soul to build an audience as essentially no one was listening. He openly admitted to listening to the London soul pirates and sourced a lot of the music from listening to them. It could be argued it was very PSB

The new R2 spin-off station would be the logical next move.

I certainly do. It was must listen radio for me.
Tony introduced me to music that I still listen to today.
