Give Me Joy in My Heart (Oil in my Lamp) (Sing Hosanna)
I sung that as "Sing Susannah" for about two years at primary school!
Anyone remember Autmn Days?
I remember Sing Hosanna! We used to have to sing it every week
Some of them bring back so many memories.I never forget how many times people were told off for miming and then had to stand up in front of everyone.
We also had a teacher in both the infants and juniors who could play the piano. In the Junior school when the teacher was away, our headmaster would play the electric gutair which made it more fun.
we had overhead projectors and teachers who played the piano,my kids school still does
if it was your birthday in the infants you had to stand up in front of everyone and blow out the candles in the "birthday log" a piece of wood they used to stick candles in,it was very high tech!
i always missed out cos my birthday is at christmas
We had a music department so we had quite a few teachers able to play the piano or guitar. A few times they even let some of the bands (as in rock!) play the songs. In the lower primary we mainly used an overhead projector but in the junior school you also had to get a proper little red hymn book (at least until the school brought out their around P7). In Senior school we had a proper big hall with an organ which drowned out most of the singing if it wasn't full of people singing properly. However S6 always tried to make more noise than it during the School Hymn.
We always did Kumbaya My Lord, Sing Hosanna and Morning Has Broken to name but a few, with the words on the old overhead projector and prehistoric teacher on piano.
I was too embarrassed to sing though, I always mimed.
Did any of you have the "come and praise" book in assembly,
It was sort of a mottled blue and white with faint pictures of children singing on. Quite old fashioned looking.
We are talking early to mid 80s here....
And I am confused about the teacher who played the piano who was put on a projector
OMG, yes! I remember that book.
This thread has brough back memories and made me realise what a complete and utter waste of time singing all this religious stuff was for all the good it did me. It f*cked me up royal and proper and religious blah like this should be banned around kids.
All together now, "Jesus wants me for a sunBEAM, to shine for him each day... Ever reflecting his goodness, at home, at school, at play..." Bleurgh!
"Autumn leaves when the grass is jewelled, & the silk inside a chestnut shell"
"... jet planes meeting in the air to be refuelled, all these things I love so well..."
Any one find a link to the rest of this one??
And the taste of apple pie!
The come and praise him books, there were two different ones, one was blue and the other one yellow, with picture of kids on it.
Did everyone else's primary school have a teacher who was also a piano player for all these songs? I sort of took it for granted back then, but thinking about it now, that's quite an additional skill to have! We were high-tech as well; they stuck them on one of those projector things you still see in musty old offices.
Can anyone remember: There are hundreds of sparrows, thousands, millions?
Yeah! After seeing this thread last night, I started discussing it with my friend this morning and we were racking our brains (well, more me!) for all the songs we used to sing. Ahh primary school days....
Main ones I can think of are:
Green Pastures (?)
Lord of the Dance
Colours of Day
Sing Hosanna (which I accidentally called Sing Susannah this morning - the friend found it hilarious!)
Hundreds of Sparrows, Thousands, Millions.
In *** fair city where girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
************
Through streets broad and narrow
singing cockles and mussels
alive alive O
alive alive O, alive alive O
singing cockles and mussles Alive alive O
I loved school assemblies
In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty....
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone
As she wheeled her wheel barrow
through the streets broad and narrow.....
That song used to frighten me when I was small... I can't remember why now - did she die at the end and come back as a ghost?
Without fail someone would always say round too soon which lead to our head teachers yelling 'patience now children' XD!! Good times.
We sang that in assembly yesterday!! LOL
We didn't do hymns in Primary school though. Remember the Football crazy football mad song and heaps of others as well that I doubt people will recognise LOL And our school song which was in Latin (for primary school?!?! )

Does anyone recall if i needed a neighbour

One song that we used to sing that I don't think has been mentioned yet is 'Water Of Life' It goes something like
'Its the water
Water of life
Jesus gives us the water of life'
I did, and I went to primary school in the mid to late 90s.
I remember at high school no one sang unless the teacher offered sweets for the loudest singer, then we'd raise the roof off.
I was too embarrassed to sing though, I always mimed.

Oh, and the "purple headed mountain" from "All Things Bright and Beautiful" is a bit rude, intit?
And the taste of apple pie!
The come and praise him books, there were two different ones, one was blue and the other one yellow, with picture of kids on it.
"she'll be coming round the mountain when she come's"
Mrs Pragnall was ours, scarey looking too.
Hands together, softly so,
Little eyes shut tight;
Father, just before we go,
Hear our prayer tonight.
Goodnight.
We sung that, I liked singing the Autumn song, Lord of the Dance and the Knight's one.
"Though(through?) the eye of sinful man".
For years I read that
"Though(through?) the eye of sniffle man".

We often had a music afternoon on Thursdays and there would always be an encore of 'She'll be coming round the mountain....

Two that I really got a walloping for was:
"Who built the Ark? No-one! No-one!
Who build the ark, brother - no-one built the ark!"
and
"Oh come let us adore him, oh come let us adore him, oh come let us adore him, christ, I'm bored!"
I probably deserved it but I'd had a phobia of religious hymns ever since
Amen.
